The present study investigated instabilities of immiscible liquid-liquid two-phase laminar flow in micro channel systems. Four representative flow patterns, i.e. stratified flow, stratified wavy flow, stratified flow with inclined interface and annular flow, were observed due to the difference of channel dimension of the organic-phase flow and physical properties of liquids.

Forced coalescence of liquid marbles is reported. Liquid marbles were connected by a glass rod hydrophilized with cold radiofrequency plasma. The process resulted in formation of Janus-marbles. “Sandwich” marbles enclosing solid foamed polystyrene particles and built from immiscible liquids are reported. A broad variety of organic and non-organic powders gives rise to Janus and “sandwich” marbles.

We report a deformation phenomenon occurring at the interface between two immiscible liquids. The two liquids are in a cylindrical container and set into motion by a rotating lid positioned above the interface. The upper liquid is more viscous than the lower and the difference in densities between the liquids is fairly small. As the rotational speed of the lid (Omega) is increased in small incr...

We study the dynamics of systems with a polar dynamic preferred direction. Examples include the pattern-forming growth of bacteria as well as shoals of fish, flocks of birds and migrating insects. Due to the fact that the preferred direction only exists dynamically, but not statically, the macroscopic variable of choice is the macroscopic velocity associated with the motion of the active units,...

The phase separation between two immiscible liquids advected by a bidimensional velocity field is investigated numerically by solving the corresponding Cahn-Hilliard equation. We study how the spinodal decomposition process depends on the presence-or absence-of Lagrangian chaos. A fully chaotic flow, in particular, limits the growth of domains, and for unequal volume fractions of the liquids, a...

The meniscus between two immiscible liquids of different refractive indices can be used as a lens. A change in curvature of this meniscus by electrostatic control of the solid/liquid interfacial tension leads to a change in focal distance. It is demonstrated that two liquids in a tube form a self-centred variable-focus lens. The optical properties of this lens were investigated experimentally. ...

The proof-of-principle for the separation of metals by solvent extraction using two mutually immiscible ionic liquids is given. Cobalt was extracted from the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride to the ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate. A distribution ratio of 44 was obtained. Cobalt could be selectively separated from nickel, with a...

The meniscus between two immiscible liquids can be used as an optical lens. A change in curvature of this meniscus by electrowetting leads to a change in focal distance. It is demonstrated that two liquids in a tube form a self-centered lens with a high optical quality. The motion of the lens during a focusing action was studied by observation through the transparent tube wall. Finally, a minia...

The flow of two immiscible fluids in porous media is ubiquitous particularly in petroleum exploration and extraction. The displacement of one fluid by another immiscible with it represents a very important aspect in what is called enhanced oil recovery. Another example is related to the long-term sequestration of carbon dioxide, CO2, in deep geologic formations. In this technique, supercritical...
