Advances in treating peripheral nerve lesions have resulted from research in nerve regeneration and the use biomaterials as well as synthetic materials. When direct tensionless repair of peripheral nerve lesions is not possible, nerve conduits may be used to bridge digital sensory nerve gaps of ≤3 cm. Nerve autograft is the benchmark for larger, longer, mixed, or motor nerve defects. Biologic, ...
PURPOSE We investigated surgical results of staple line coverage with a polyglycolic acid sheet plus pleural abrasion by thoracoscopic surgery for treating primary spontaneous pneumothorax in young patients. METHODS Forty-seven patients younger than 40 years underwent 48 thoracoscopic surgical procedures for spontaneous pneumothorax at the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, ...
Cytological analysis of material aspirated from the effusion which occasionally develops around a polyglycolic acid (PGA) osteosynthesis implant showed a predominance of inflammatory monocytes and in particular lymphocytes. In order to discover whether PGA implants are immunologically inert, density gradient-isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured in 0.2 ml of 10% delta FCS-RP...
Fabrication methods and property characterization of polyglycolic acid (PGA), polylactic acid (PLA), and their copolymers are reviewed. Both of these aliphatic polyesters belong to the a-hydroxy group and biodegrade in a physiological environment to monomeric acids, which are readily processed and excreted from the body. The physical and mechanical characteristics discussed include molecular we...
This experiment investigates the holding property of polyglycolic acid suture in repair of divided dog sciatic nerves and the influence of absorption of this synthetic material on regeneration. The conclusion is that PGA maintains its tensile strength sufficently long to allow both physical union and good regeneration of the divided nerve. The suture absorption does not influence regeneration.

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal anastomosis remains associated with a considerable burden of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality. Functional end-to-end anastomosis, whilst extremely efficient, is vulnerable to increased intestinal pressure in the immediate postoperative period, which may predispose to development of anastomotic leakage or bleeding. Therefore, there is a requirement for new tech...
OBJECTIVE Cutting the intersegmental plane by using a stapler during segmentectomy might interfere with the expansion of the preserved lung due to visceral pleura caught in a staple line, especially in a large regional segmentectomy, such as left upper division or basal segmentectomy. We compared the preserved lung volume after segmentectomy among the methods using stapler, sharp dissection, an...
