OBJECTIVE Early-stage oral or oropharyngeal carcinomas are often treated with surgical resection. Resulting wounds that are too large for primary closure can be covered with skin grafts or patches made from various biomaterials. Recently, polyglycolic acid sheets have been used for this purpose. METHODS We treated six patients with large wounds resulting from the resection of oral or orophary...

UNLABELLED Any suture material, absorbable or nonabsorbable, elicits a kind of inflammatory reaction within the tissue. Nonabsorbable black silk suture and absorbable polyglycolic acid suture were compared clinically and histologically on various parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study consisted of 50 patients requiring minor surgical procedure, who were referred to the Department of Ora...

In recent years, treatment techniques in which polyglycolic acid sheets are applied to various situations with fibrin glue have exhibited great clinical potential, and previous studies have reported safety and efficacy. We describe closure of a non-healing perforated duodenal ulcer with the use of a polyglycolic acid sheet and fibrin glue in an elderly patient who was not a candidate for surgery.

In this study, the authors examined use of piezoelectric inkjet printing to apply an antifungal agent, voriconazole, to the surfaces of biodegradable polyglycolic acid microneedles. Polyglycolic acid microneedles with sharp tips (average tip radius = 25 ± 3 μm) were prepared using a combination of injection molding and drawing lithography. The elastic modulus (9.9 ± 0.3 GPa) and hardness (588.2...

Wound infection after surgery can be addressed to bacteria inoculation into the operation site. Sutures can facilitate bacteria colonization on them. Several suture types are used in the oral cavity. The aim of this clinical study was to compare bacterial adhesion tendencies on silk, polyglycolic acid sutures and polyglecaprone 25 sutures. Eight patients underwent lower impacted third molar sur...

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the reaction of peripheral nerve tissue to a synthetic absorbable suture material. Polyglycolic acid suture material was investigated by means of electron photomicrographs. It was concluded that placement of polyglycolic acid into the peculiar environment of endoneurial tissues results in minimal scarring and in minimal disturbance of the surroundin...

The high retear rates after surgery for irreparable rotator cuff tears can be explained by the healing capacity potential of tendons and the native rotator cuff enthesis characterised by complex morphological structures, called direct insertion. Many experimental researches have focused on biologically augmenting the rotator cuff reconstruction and improving tendon-bone healing of the rotator c...

In a prospective trial, biodegradable polyglycolic acid rods were compared with Kirschner wires for fixation of wrist fractures (Frykman types I, II, V and VI). Fifteen patients were randomly assigned to each treatment group. There was no significant difference between the groups with regard to age, sex ratio and fracture type. Kapandji's pinning technique was used in all cases. There were no s...
