Cold treatments are predominantly used to inhibit decay of stored commodities and to extend their shelf life. Recently, cold treatments have been used successfully to control insect pests, mainly in tropical commodities, providing chilling injury can be avoided. This paper summarises the main uses of cold storage as a quarantine treatment.
In order to obtain optimum packaging materials for peanut kernels, the effects of four types of packaging materials on peanut storage quality (coat color, acid value, germination rate, relative damage, and prevention of aflatoxin contamination) were examined. The results showed that packaging materials had a major influence on peanut storage quality indexes. The color of the peanut seed coat pa...
We conducted an experiment in Niger to evaluate the performance of hermetic triple layer (Purdue Improved Crop Storage- PICS) bags for the preservation of shelled and unshelled groundnut Arachis hypogaea L. Naturally-infested groundnut was stored in PICS bags and woven bags for 6.7 months. After storage, the average oxygen level in the PICS bags fell from 21% to 18% (v/v) and 21%-15% (v/v) for ...
Methyl bromide (MBr) fumigant has been phased out globally honouring ‘Montreal Protocol’. However, MBr is still used in India various commodities for controlling pests as well international trade requirements. Reports on phosphine efficacy under different ecological zones are scanty. In the present study fumigation trials were conducted warehouses 5 Metric-Tons of wheat stacks per replication a...
"Pesta," a new granular product for use with entrapped biocontrol agents, is based on a cohesive dough made of wheat flour, fillers, and other additives. Infective juveniles of the entomopathogen Steinernema carpocapsae strain All incorporated in Pesta granules emerged when the granules were softened by immersion in water. These granules may be useful for the biocontrol of insect pests in the s...
The research aims to detect insect in betel nut storage (Areca catechu) using some sampling methods. was conducted by survey method three methods, namely hand method, yellow sticky trap and dome method. parameters observed were types of pests found, populations obtained, abundance pest populations. from July October 2018 four storagesin Jambi City Muaro District. Insects found the storages with...
Shifts to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in agriculture are assisted by the identification of chemical applications that provide effective control of pests relative to broad-spectrum pesticides but have fewer negative effects on natural enemy (beneficial) groups that assist in pest control. Here, we outline a framework for identifying such applications and apply this framework to field trials...
The long-term fitness of individuals is examined in complex and temporally dynamic ecosystems. We call this multigeneration fitness measure "future fitness". Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous insect that feeds on many wild and cultivated hosts. While four generations of H. zea occur during the cropping season in the U.S. Mid Southern agroecosysem, the latter two...
A change in climate is known to affect seasonal timing (phenology) of the life stages of poikilothermic organisms whose development depends on temperature. Less understood is the potential for even greater disruption to the life cycle when a phenology shift exposes photoperiod-sensitive life stages to new day lengths. We present a conceptual framework and model to investigate the ways that phot...
