BACKGROUND It is well known that the naturally occurring modified triterpenes in plants have a wide diversity of chemical structures and biological functions. The lupane-, oleanane-, and ursane-type triterpenes are the three major members of natural triterpenes with a wide range of biological properties. A systematic approach is necessary to review their structures and biological activities acc...

(1)H-NMR and (13)C-NMR assignments of 12-oleanene-3,11-dione (compound 1) were completely described for the first time through conventional 1D NMR and 2D shift-correlated NMR experiments using (1)H-(1)HCOSY, HMQC, HMBC techniques. Based on its NMR data, the assignments of 28-hydroxyolean-12-ene-3,11-dione (compound 2) were partially revised.

Two novel lanostane-type triterpenes, Ganolactone B and Ganoderiol A triacetate, were isolated from the fruiting bodies of G. sinense, together with six known compounds. The structures of the two new triterpenes were determined as 3beta,7beta- dihydroxy-11,15-dioxo-lanosta-8-en-24-->20 lactone (1) and 3beta,24,26-triacetoxy-5alpha-lanosta-7,9(11)-dien-25-ol (2), respectively, by chemical and sp...

From the EtOAc and 1-BuOH fractions, three new ursane-type and four new lupane-type triterpenes, along with nine known glycosides and glycosyl esters of lupane-type were isolated from the leaves of Schefflera actinophylla. All the isolated compounds were obtained for the first time from this plant. The structures of the new triterpenes were determined through a combination of spectroscopic and ...

Five new triterpenes, one 17,14-friedolanostane (garcihombronane F, 1), three 17,13-friedolanostanes (garcihombronanes G-I, 2-4), and one lanostane (garcihombronane J, 5), were isolated from the leaves of Garcinia hombroniana together with nine known compounds including five triterpenes, two ionone-derived glycosides, and two flavonoid glucosides. Their structures were identified by analysis of...

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the induction of apoptosis and the immunomodulatory activities of alkaloids and triterpenes of Alstonia scholaris (Linn.) R. Br. leaves (ASL). Importantly, their possible synergistic properties were also explored in this study. Human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 and Lewis tumor-bearing C57BL/6 mice were used for the evaluation of their activities. A ...

Pentacyclic triterpenes are secondary plant metabolites widespread in fruit peel, leaves and stem bark. In particular the lupane-, oleanane-, and ursane triterpenes display various pharmacological effects while being devoid of prominent toxicity. Therefore, these triterpenes are promising leading compounds for the development of new multi-targeting bioactive agents. Screening of 39 plant materi...

This research evaluated the effects of triterpenes on the regulation of STZ-induced hyperglycaemic diabetes through an anti-inflammatory response. Diabetic mice were orally administered various concentrations of triterpenes on a daily basis. Weight gain, volume of drinking water, and liver and spleen weight were recorded and evaluated. These evaluations presented a positive regulation to the ab...

Pentacyclic triterpenes are naturally found in a great variety of fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants and are therefore part of the human diet. The beneficial health effects of edible and medicinal plants have partly been associated with their triterpene content, but the in vivo efficacy in humans depends on many factors, including absorption and metabolism. This review presents an overview...

Pentacyclic triterpenic compounds including asiatic, betulinic, maslinic, oleanolic and ursolic acid occur naturally in many herbs and plant foods. It is well known that these triterpenoids possess anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. Furthermore, recent in vitro and in vivo researches indicated that these compounds could inhibit the production of advanced glycation end-products (AG...
