We demonstrate a viable approach to fabricating ultrafast axial nano-oscillators based on carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) using molecular dynamics simulations. Initiated by a single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT), a monolayer graphene can continuously scroll into a CNS with the CNT housed inside. The CNT inside the CNS can oscillate along axial direction at a natural frequency of tens of gigahertz. We ...

In the last years carbon nanotubes have attracted increasing attention for their potential applications in the biomedical field as diagnostic and therapeutic nano tools. Here we investigate the antimicrobial activity of different fully characterized carbon nanotube types (single walled, double walled and multi walled) on representative pathogen species: Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram...

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most significant achievements of nano-technology because of its important applications in the design of electronic nano-devices. The study of their properties is therefore important. In this study, Density Functional Theory (DFT) was used to investigate the adsorption of gas molecules on the surface of carbon nanotubes. Theoretical studies have found that ...

A facile approach has been developed for non-covalently stabilising pristine C60 and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in water in the presence of p-phosphonic acid calix[8]arene, along with the formation of a 'pea-pod' encapsulation of the fullerene inside the MWCNTs. Aqueous dispersions of the different carbon nano-materials are readily decorated with palladium nanoparticles.

Nano-TaOx particles were supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes via the thermal decomposition of oxy-tantalum phthalocyanine. The phthalocyanine-derived carbon connected TaOx particles with the nanotube-support to provide a conductive path. The oxygen reduction reaction activity, which solely originated from TaOx, was above 0.9 V with larger currents than conventional TaOx particles in acid...

We investigate the motion of a nano tippe top, which is formed from a C60 fullerene, and which is assumed to be spinning on either a graphene sheet or the interior of a single-walled carbon nanotube. We assume no specific geometric configuration for the top, however for example, the nano tippe top might be formed by joining a fullerene C60 with a small segment of a smaller radius carbon nanotub...

This paper deals with dynamic Stability of single walled carbon nanotube. Strain gradient theory and Euler-Bernouli beam theory are implemented to investigate the dynamic stability of SWCNT embedded in an elastic medium. The equations of motion were derived by Hamilton principle and non-local elasticity approach. The nonlocal parameter accounts for the small-size effects when dealing with nano-...

In the process of crude oil desalination, the aim is to separate dispersed phase of brine from oil phase. The project aim is the use of carbon nano-adsorbent for remov-al of salt from crude oil that, unlike other methods of salt separation from crude oil currently used, is a simple, inexpensive method with good ability to remove salt from crude oil. In this study, first, four types of carbon ad...

Ultra fine (2-3 nm) magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) nano-particles are uniformly deposited on single-walled carbon nano-tubes (SWCNTs) pre-functionalised with carboxylic acid groups using microwave radiation. The deposition process involves chemical precipitation associated with continuous flow spinning disc processing (SDP), as a rapid, environmentally friendly approach which is readily scalable for lar...

Over the recent years, numerical modelling and computer based simulation of the properties of carbon nanotubes have become the focal points of research in computational nano-science. In this paper, we present the computational studies about the mechanical and transport properties of armchair (4, 4) and zigzag (4, 0) single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Unlike other materials, carbon nanotube...
