Background & Aims: Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is one of the common retina disorders that can lead to loss of vision by increase in age. In this study, the efficacy of a non-invasive ultrasound technique for the evaluation of alastic properties of eye in the diagnosis of ARMD has been evaluated. Methods: For estimation of the elastic modulus of eye, spatial loading system designed a...

PURPOSE To evaluate the association between age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and sensory neural hearing impairment (SHI). METHODS In this case-control study, hearing status of 46 consecutive patients with ARMD were compared with 46 age-matched cases without clinical ARMD as a control group. In all patients, retinal involvements were confirmed by clinical examination, fluorescein angiog...

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) continues to be a significant public health concern, given its high prevalence and potential blinding prognosis in the elderly. Several risk factors have been identified in the development of ARMD, including age, race, and family history. The pathogenesis of ARMD continues to be elucidated, and recent research has focused on genetic factors. ARMD presents...

OBJECTIVES We analysed different risk factors involved in the onset of both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). The putative relation between both disorders was studied. METHODS We studied 57 subjects to determine the correlation between AD and ARMD. Thirty-three of the subjects suffered dementia (cases), whereas 24 of them (controls) did not. Firstly, anamne...

PURPOSE To determine the cellular origin and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) immunoreactivity of the nonvascular stromal cells in surgically excised age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)-associated choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVMs). METHODS Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on frozen sections of eight surgically excised ARMD-related CNVMs. RESULTS Cytokeratin-...

CASE REPORT We report a 34-year-old woman with biopsy proven type II mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (MCG II) who had an ophthalmic fundal appearance similar to that seen in patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). DISCUSSION All patients with MCG II should be reviewed regularly by an ophthalmologist to assess and treat any retinal complications.
