Superior laryngeal artery (SLA) is one of the main branches of the superior thyroid artery that its main function is to supply blood to the larynx. This artery is accompanied by the internal branch of superior laryngeal nerve; this relation has anatomical and surgical significance. In this paper, a case of anomalous origin of the superior laryngeal artery is reported. Abnormal origin of SLA fro...

Background and Purpose A model for cerebral ischemia that requires injection of emboli into the internal carotid artery of the rabbit is commonly used. However, in our experience we have found the anatomy of the cervical carotid to be highly variable. If not appreciated, this may result in unexpectedly high variability in the severity of ischemic injury. We undertook this experimental protocol ...

Background and purpose : Ârterial embolism is one of the most prevalent cause of transient ischemic attack (TÏÂ) and other types of brain ischemias and about 5o% of TÏÂ patiens have vascular stenosis. Therefore the presence of mild atherosclerotic plaques in carotid arteries, as a source of embdlism in causing TÏÂ and other brain strokes are of a great importance. Ïn present study the ...

Three cases of intractable spontaneous posterior epistaxis refractory to nasal packing and complicated by ipsilateral carotid artery occlusive disease were successfully treated with internal maxillary artery occlusion with microcoils. There were no complications and no recurrent episodes of epistaxis at a mean follow-up of 12 months. The presence of ipsilateral carotid artery disease requires m...

We report a case of agenesis of the internal carotid artery associated with neurofibromatosis type II. Common carotid arteriograms showed no visualization of the internal carotid artery. CT revealed absence of the corresponding carotid canal. MR documented absence of the internal carotid artery in the cavernous sinus.

OBJECTIVES To explore the possibility of pathological change in the common carotid artery at the bifurcation and in the internal carotid artery beyond the bifurcation which could contribute to a reduced diastolic pressure as observed in primary open angle glaucoma. DESIGN Duplex ultrasonic examinations of carotid bifurcations were conducted on 80 patients. Carotid artery defects were allocate...

Directed carotid cavernous fistula means high blood flow shunts between the internal carotid artery and the cavernous sinus. Obstructing the abnormal shunt between the internal carotid artery and the cavernous sinus while preserving the internal carotid artery is the key role in fistula treatment. Transarterial balloon embolization is currently the gold standard treatment for most of the caroti...

Anatomical variations involving the internal carotid artery are uncommon. Herein, we present a very rare origin of the internal carotid artery. An adult female presented to the emergency department after falling. Imaging revealed that the left internal carotid artery arose from the contralateral cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery. Such a variation should be kept in mind by radiolo...

Agenesis of the internal carotid artery associated with an anomalous middle cerebral artery originating from the contralateral internal carotid artery is rare. We report a patient with agenesis of the internal carotid artery presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a rupture of an aneurysm in the anterior communicating artery.

Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive technique which is widely used in medicine for the assessment of blood flow in vessels. Therefore, Doppler ultrasonography is known as a reliable technique, which demonstrates the flow characteristics and resistance of internal carotid arteries in stenosis and occlusion conditions. In this study, internal carotid arterial Doppler signals recorded from 130 sub...
