Mycobacterium bovis, one of several mycobacteria of the M. tuberculosis complex, is a global zoonotic pathogen that primarily infects cattle. Humans become infected by consuming unpasteurized dairy products from infected cows; possible person-to-person airborne transmission has also been reported. In April 2014, a man in Nebraska who was born in Mexico was determined to have extensive pulmonary...

The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of enterotoxigenic and enteroaggregative Escherichia coli strains and antibiotic resistance of the isolates in raw milk and unpasteurized cheese. Out of 200 samples of raw milk and 50 samples of unpasteurized cheeses, 96 and 24 strains of E. coli were isolated, respectively. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detec...

Brucella species are intracellular zoonotic pathogens which cause, among other pathologies, increased rates of abortion in ruminants. Human infections are generally associated with exposure to contaminated and unpasteurized dairy products; however Brucellae have been developed as bioweapons. Here we present 17 complete and 7 scaffolded genome assemblies of Brucella strains.

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii, a unique bacterium that is widespread but infrequently associated with human illness or outbreaks. We report on evidence of infection with C. burnetii in a small group of regular consumers of raw (unpasteurized) milk from the same dairy in Michigan.

We conducted a retrospective study of Salmonella Newport infections among Wisconsin residents during 2003-2005. Multidrug resistance prevalence was substantially greater in Wisconsin than elsewhere in the United States. Persons with multidrug-resistant infections were more likely than persons with susceptible infections to report exposure to cattle, farms, and unpasteurized milk.
