1. The influence of trace-nutrient-binding proteins on the growth of coliforms, streptococci and lactobacilli in the gastrointestinal tract was examined in neonatal rabbits delivered germ-free and dosed with an artificial flora (ESL), or born conventionally and dosed with ESL or rabbit faeces. 2. In the stomach and small intestine of both gnotobiotic and conventional animals the counts of colif...

A cross-sectional study was conducted in four rural communities of northeastern Trinidad to determine the microbial quality of water supply to households and that quality's relationship to source and storage device. Of the 167 household water samples tested, total coliforms were detected in 132 of the samples (79.0%), fecal coliforms in 102 (61.1%), and E. coli in 111 (66.5%). There were signif...

A 7-day course of either cephradine or amoxicillin-clavulanate treatment caused no significant change in fecal flora composition, except that staphylococci were virtually eliminated in both groups. Some amoxicillin-resistant coliforms were isolated after treatment in both groups, but cephradine- or amoxicillin-clavulanate-resistant coliforms were rarely isolated.

There is currently no established bacteriological beach quality monitoring (BQM) program in place in Malaysia. To initiate cost-effective, sustainable bacteriological BQM schemes for the ultimate goal of protecting public health, policy decision makers need to be provided robust, indigenous empirical findings that validate appropriate water quality parameters for inclusion in such monitoring pr...

In general, the meat contains nutrients of high biological value and susceptible to contamination by enteropathogens. One way minimizing/eliminating this is use food additives, in case meat, usually sodium sulphite. This technological resource used inhibit growth pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella spp. thermotolerant coliforms, mandatory parameters foreseen sanitary legislation. Therefore, ...

California’s beach water quality monitoring programs are the most comprehensive in the nation. State Health Services regulations implemented in response to California Assembly Bill 411 require measurement of three indicator bacteria (total coliforms, fecal coliforms and enterococci) on at least a weekly basis at high use beaches. Regulations further require that the public be warned of possible...

Rectal swabs were taken from healthy household dogs that, insofar as could be determined, had not received antimicrobial drugs. Tetracycline-resistant coliforms comprised 80 to 100% of the total number of coliforms in 61 (65%) of the 94 dogs sampled. The median number of other resistance determinants possessed by these tetracycline-resistant coliforms was 5.1. Of the tetracycline-resistant stra...
