The potential for cross-reaction between Cryptococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum in antigen assays was evaluated. We tested patient samples, spleens from infected mice, and purified polysaccharides in the MVista Histoplasma antigen enzyme immunoassay and cryptococcal antigen latex agglutination system for cross-reactivity, and none was observed.

We report the isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from a culture of the viscera of Didelphis albiventris, one of the marsupial species found in Brazil. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of this fungus from this mammalian species. This finding confirms the ubiquitous presence of H. capsulatum in nature.

To analyze the eco-epidemiologic aspects of Histoplasma capsulatum in Brazil, we tested 83 bats for this fungus. Although H. capsulatum was not isolated, Coccidioides posadasii was recovered from Carollia perspicillata bat lungs.
