The beam splitter and phase shifter, which are the key elements in the experiments of light interference, are realized in the motion of trapped ions. Some applications, such as the creation of quantum motional states and the realization of Mach-Zehnder interferometer, are illustrated. Several detection methods of motional states used in the interferometer are also discussed.
In this paper, we present several applications of the Michelson Interferometer in analyzing monochromatic, dichromatic, and white light. First, the wavelength of the mercury green line is determined to be 540 ± 36theo ± 10sys nm by measuring the fringe separation. An estimate was made by counting fringes passing a reference point as a platform mounted mirror was moved translationally with a pre...
The European Space Agency’s infrared space interferometer DARWIN is dedicated to the investigation of Earth-like extrasolar planets orbiting bright stars. A multi-aperture interferometer fed by free-flying telescopes allows spectroscopic analysis of the weak planet signal which could give hints on the possibility of the existence of Earth-like life. However, for a Sun/Earth-like constellation a...
The injection of squeezed light can be used to improve the sensitivity of an interferometer beyond the limit imposed by the zero-point fluctuation of the electromagnetic field. Here, we report on the realization of such a quantum-enhanced interferometer with a fiber-based Sagnac topology. Continuous wave squeezed states at 1550 nm with a noise reduction of 6.4 dB below shot noise were produced ...
In this Letter, a collimated light acoustooptic lateral shearing interferometer (AO/LSI) capable of variable shear is described for use with either visual or ac electronic real-time phase measurements. The principle of operation of the AO/LSI is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An input beam of diameter W is incident at Bragg’s angle upon two acoustooptic modulators (AOM’s) in series. They are shown sch...
Many astronomical objects are expected to be strongly polarized on the angular scales accessible with optical and infrared interferometry. Passage of stellar light through the optical trains of a long-baseline interferometer can induce cross talk between the polarized and unpolarized components of the light. As a result, the calibrated interferometric visibilities may depend on a difficult-to-s...
The French-Italian interferometric gravitational wave detector VIRGO is currently being commissioned. Its principal instrument is a Michelson interferometer with 3 km long optical cavities in the arms and a powerrecycling mirror. This paper gives an overview of the present status of the system. We report on the presently attained sensitivity and the system’s performance during the recent commis...
We present a novel interferometer for measuring angular distributions of backscattered light. The new system exploits a low-coherence source in a modified Michelson interferometer to provide depth resolution, as in optical coherence tomography, but includes an imaging system that permits the angle of the reference field to be varied in the detector plane by simple translation of an optical elem...
We present an overview of quantum noise in gravitational wave interferometers. Gravitational wave detectors are extensively modified variants of a Michelson interferometer and the quantum noise couplings are strongly influenced by the interferometer configuration. We describe recent developments in the treatment of quantum noise in the complex interferometer configurations of present-day and fu...
The wave-particle duality of light was verified by multi and single photon interference both through Young’s double slit and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In these two sets of experiments, the interference in the single photon level is the same as that at multi photons level with long enough exposure time. In the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the “whichpath” information can be identified by measu...
