A computer-aided homology search of databases found that the nucleotide sequences flanking ATLN44, a non-LTR retrotransposon (LINE) from Arabidopsis thaliana, are repeated in the A. thaliana genome. These sequences are homologous to flanking sequences of 664 bp with terminal inve
Natural selection drives the accumulation of amino acid tandem repeats in human proteins.
Amino acid tandem repeats are found in a large number of eukaryotic proteins. They are often encoded by trinucleotide repeats and exhibit high intra- and interspecies size variability due to the high mutation rate associated with replication slippage. The extent to which natural
Polymorphic CAG and GGN repeat lengths in the androgen receptor gene and prostate cancer risk: a population-based case-control study in China.
The length of the polymorphic CAG trinucleotide repeat in the polyglutamine region of the androgen receptor (AR) gene is inversely correlated with the transactivation function of the AR. Because increased androgenic activity has been linked to prostate cancer and because an ethni
An isoform of microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) containing four repeats of the tubulin-binding motif.
Microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) exists in both high- and low-molecular mass isoforms, each of which has a tubulin-binding domain consisting of 3 imperfect tandem repeats of 31 amino acids containing a more highly conserved 18 amino acid 'core' sequence. We describe here a
Double-strand break repair pathways protect against CAG/CTG repeat expansions, contractions and repeat-mediated chromosomal fragility in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Trinucleotide repeats can form secondary structures, whose inappropriate repair or replication can lead to repeat expansions. There are multiple loci within the human genome where expansion of trinucleotide repeats leads to disease. Although it is known that expanded repeats accu
Repeatability of hematocrits and body mass of Gray Catbirds
Hematocrits may provide information about the physiological condition of birds, but, to be a useful measure, information is needed concerning how hematocrits vary among individuals and over time. We examined the repeatability of hematocrits in a population of Gray Catbirds (Dumet
When more is less: Pathogenesis of glutamine repeat neurodegenerative diseases
Five neurodegenerative diseases are caused by expanding CAG triplet repeats coding for polyglutamine. They all involve loss of selected populations of neurons, usually in adulthood. How the genetic lesions cause progressive neuronal degeneration is unknown. Unraveling the pathoge
Elevated evolutionary rate in genes with homopolymeric amino acid repeats constituting nondisordered structure.
Homopolymeric amino acid repeats are tandem repeats of single amino acids. About 650 genes are known to have repeats of this kind comprising seven residues or more in the human genome. According to the evolutionary conservativeness, we classified the repeats into three categories
Ankyrin repeat: a unique motif mediating protein-protein interactions.
Ankyrin repeat, one of the most widely existing protein motifs in nature, consists of 30-34 amino acid residues and exclusively functions to mediate protein-protein interactions, some of which are directly involved in the development of human cancer and other diseases. Each ankyr
Comparative analysis of amino acid repeats in rodents and humans.
Amino acid tandem repeats, also called homopolymeric tracts, are extremely abundant in eukaryotic proteins. To gain insight into the genome-wide evolution of these regions in mammals, we analyzed the repeat content in a large data set of rat-mouse-human orthologs. Our results sho
