Fe(x)Pt(100-x) nanoparticles of varying composition have been synthesized with various shapes and sizes using a high pressure synthesis method which allows control of synthesis conditions, in particular the reaction temperature. Tailoring the shapes and sizes of Fe(x)Pt(1-x) nanoparticles allows one to control a variety of properties that are relevant to the many potential applications of metal...

This work reports a solution-based method for on chip growth of wrinkled gold nanoparticles. During the growth process, time-resolved scattering profiles were measured, which permitted one to collect information regarding the growth kinetics. Finally, using the fabricated substrate, a 30 times stronger SERS enhancement was achieved than a spherical nanoparticle immobilized substrate.

Nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) was first applied to biologically active nanocomplexes to obtain concurrent information on their size, state of aggregation, concentration, and antigenic specificity in liquid. The subject of the NTA was an immunogenic complex (a candidate nanovaccine) comprised of spherical particles (SPs) generated by thermal remodeling of the tobacco mosaic virus and Rube...

The purpose of this study was to design and evaluate a novel target nanoparticle for disease detection and drug delivery using the biotin-avidin binding system. The formed lectin-conjugated chitosan fluorescent nanoparticles were of spherical shape(100-200 nm in diameter), which were more stable under light than pure fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC).

Polynuclear manganese complexes are used as precursors for the synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles (MnO NPs). Altering the thermal decomposition conditions can shift the nanoparticle product from spherical, thermodynamically-driven NPs to unusual, kinetically-controlled octapod structures. The resulting increased surface area profoundly alters the NP's surface-dependent magnetism and may...

We present an electrodynamical model of a quantum plasmonic device--the magneto-optical (MO) spaser. It is shown that a spherical gain nanoparticle coated with a metallic MO shell can operate as a spaser amplifying circularly polarized surface plasmons. The MO spaser may be used in design of an optical isolator in plasmonic transmission lines as well as in spaser spectrometry of chiral molecules.

Hollow spherical gold nanoparticle superstructures with tunable diameters (∼40 nm, ∼70 nm and ∼150 nm) and visible to near-infrared surface plasmon resonances (545 nm, 670 nm, and 740 nm) are prepared using a single peptide conjugate, C6-AA-PEPAu, as the structure-directing agent. Computational models are developed to understand their optical properties.

The ability to construct size- and shape-controllable architectures using nanoparticles as building blocks is essential for the exploration of nanoparticle-structured properties. This paper reports findings of an investigation of a mediator-template strategy for the size-controllable assembly of nanoparticles. This strategy explores multidentate thioether ligands as molecular mediators and tetr...

A current goal in nanotechnology focuses on the assembly of different nanoparticle types into 3D organized structures. In this paper we report the use of a liquid crystal host phase in a new process for the generation of micron-scale vesicle-like nanoparticle shells stabilized by ligand-ligand interactions. The constructs formed consist of a robust, thin spherical layer, composed of closely pac...
