OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on pediatric residents' resuscitation fund of knowledge, technical skills, confidence, and overall performance. DESIGN Prospective, nonconcurrent, controlled interventional trial. SETTING Urban pediatric tertiary care hospital. PARTICIPANTS An intervention group (IG) of 28 pediatric residents graduating in 1997, and a ...
Proteins have regular tertiary structures but irregular amino acid sequences. This made it very difficult to decode the structural information in the protein sequences. Here we demonstrate that many small α protein domains have hidden sequence symmetries characteristic of their pseudo-symmetric tertiary structures. We also present a modified method of recurrent plot to reveal this kind of the h...
Different amino acid sequences can fold into similar tertiary structures but the reasons for it are not very clear. It has been suggested in the literature that these sequences may have some common features associated with them but the exact nature of such shared properties remains largely unknown. We studied a representative sample of proteins from the beta-trefoil family and observed that the...
In this paper, Parallel Simulated Annealing using Genetic Crossover (PSA/GAc) is applied to predict protein tertiary structures. The target protein is C-peptide that is consisted of 13 amino acids. The results are compared to those of the former studies. Then it is found that PSA/GAc is an effective method to predict protein tertiary structures.
Background: The ability of tumour suppressor protein p53 (P53) to regulate cell cycle processes can be modulated by hepatitis B virus (HBV). While preliminary evidences indicates the involvement of protein-x of HBV (HBx) in altering p53 DNA binding, no further data have been accumulated for the significance of serum p53 in chronic hepatitis B virus infected patients. Methods: 72 non-cirrhotic a...

Alkylmalonic esters, which have been recognized as important intermediates in the syntheses of various carboxylic acids, amino acids, etc., can be obtained by a variety of methods.1) Excepting the introduction of tertiary alkyl groups, the alkylation of malonic esters with alkyl halides in basic conditions, for example, in ethanol in the presence of sodium ethoxide, is one of the most important...
The tertiary structure of myoglobin is that of a typical water soluble globular protein. Its secondary structure is unusual in that it contains a very high proportion (75%) of α-helical secondary structure. A myoglobin polypeptide is comprised of 8 separate right handed α-helices, designated A through H, that are connected by short non helical regions. Amino acid R-groups packed into the interi...
disulphide bridges in carcinoembryonic antigen (Thomas et af. , 1974). When carcinoembryonic antigen modified by treatment with 5.33rnhl-metaperiodate was hydrolysed in oxygen-free conditions and subjected to acid hydrolysis cystine was detected in a subsequent amino acid analysis, whereas only cysteic acid was obtained from carcinoembryonic antigen treated with 0.533 M-metaperiodate. Oxidative...
