We measured the activity of rosoxacin, fosfomycin, cefotiam, and spectinomycin against 51 isolates of beta-lactamase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae, all of which were susceptible to each drug at sufficient concentrations. The development of strains of penicillinase producing N gonorrhoeae (PPNG) which are resistant to spectinomycin can therefore be avoided, as there are alternative drugs.
Two strains of Morganella morganii, AA1 and AV1, were isolated from freshwater and Eicchornia crassipes roots, respectively. Here, we report their draft genome sequences, which are ~3.6 Mb and have 51% G+C content. The predicted coding sequences (3,259 for strain AA1 and 3,345 for strain AV1) encode beta-lactamases, transpeptidases, and penicillin-binding proteins.
In 2004 and 2005, 5 metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL)-positive Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were found in 2 Greek hospitals. Isolates were unrelated and carried blaVIM-1 in a class 1 integron; bla(OXA-51-) and bla(OXA-58-like) carbapenemase genes were also detected. VIM-1 MBL in Acinetobacter spp. causes concern, given the increasing resistance of this species.
