cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

The electrochemical corrosion behaviour of mild steel embedded in concrete, and partially immersed in 0.2M H2SO4, was studied in this investigation at ambient temperature by potential monitoring technique. The experimental work was performed with a digital multimeter and a Cu/CuSO4 electrode (CSE) as the reference electrode. Extracts of carica papaya leaves and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) in differe...

Corrosion of reinforced concrete is one of the major problems in the construction industry causing premature deterioration of concrete structures well before their service life. This has placed incredible financial burden on many projects and also placed safety of users at risk. A research work was carried out to evaluate the effect of water cement ratio on corrosion of steel in reinforced conc...

Due to the progress in Computed Tomography (CT) applied for dimensional control new fields in materials characterization are opened. Especially volume properties can be non-destructively and quantitatively analysed which are non-accessible by other methods. These possibilities are used to study time dependent properties of corrosion. As an example concrete cylinders with embedded steel bars as ...

Many parameters are influenced by the diffusion of chloride on concrete in marine environments and these can affect concrete quality. In this study, the effect of water to cement ratio of 0.35, 0.40 and 0.45 on corrosion resistance and compressive strength of reinforced concrete was evaluated. Moreover, different percentages of micro silica (SiO2) including 5, 7.5 and 10% were utilized, in orde...

The behavior of corroded steel–concrete composite beams under hogging moment was studied by experimental investigation and theoretical analysis. A total of eight specimens, six of which had corroded shear studs, were tested. The corrosion rate of studs ranged from 0 to approximately 50%. The constant-current accelerated corrosion method was adopted to accelerate the corrosion process. The loadi...

In this research, a new type of corrosion monitoring technique for reinforce concrete was developed. The technique used piezoelectric sensors to detect the ultrasonic signals during corrosion. The mechanism of the method was presented. Experiment was carried out to monitor the corrosion process using piezoelectric sensors. The corrosion was also monitored using stain gauge for comparison.

Forecasting the life of concrete infrastructures in corrosive environments presents a long-standing and socially relevant challenge in science and engineering. Chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is the main cause for premature degradation of concrete infrastructures worldwide. Since the middle of the past century, this challenge has been tackled by using a conceptual ap...

Corrosion damage has been found in a number of nuclear power plant containment structures, and this could degrade the pressure capacity of the vessel. This has prompted concerns regarding the capacity of corroded containments to withstand accident loadings. For the low-carbon, low-strength steels used in containments, the effect of corrosion on material properties is discussed in this report, a...

The present study concerns a development of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) concrete to enhance the durability against an externally chemically aggressive environment, in particular, chloride-induced corrosion. To evaluate the inhibition effect and concrete properties, CAC was partially mixed with ordinary Portland cement (OPC), ranging from 5% to 15%, as a binder. As a result, it was found that...
