This review describes the results of the author's studies on glycoproteins which have been carried out for more than 50 years. Starting from the elucidation of basic structures of glycoproteins, i.e. the structure of the linkage between an amino acid and a sugar and the occurrence of the beta-mannosidic linkage as the common structure of glycoproteins, the author became interested in the cell m...

Glycoproteins were extracted from membranes of erythrocytes that displayed Tn polyagglutination and were compared chemically and immunologically with glycoproteins of group O, MN cells. Tn glycoprotein had lower than normal NANA : protein and sugar : protein ratios, as revealed by direct analysis and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and displayed slower immunoelectrophoretic mobility than gl...

The putative envelope glycoproteins of hepatitis C virus (HCV) likely play an important role in the initiation of viral infection. Available information suggests that the genomic regions encoding the putative envelope glycoproteins, when expressed as recombinant proteins in mammalian cells, largely accumulate in the endoplasmic reticulum. In this study, genomic regions which include the putativ...

Toxicity and accumulation of Cd2+ in yeasts were studied in eight different yeast species. The adaptation to toxic concentration of this metal was dependent on the production of extracellular yeast glycoproteins. The highest concentration of Cd2+ ions in the growth medium was tolerated by a Hansenula anomala, strain while the lowest tolerance was found by the strain of species Saccharomyces cer...

The synthesis of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) envelope glycoproteins and the production of infectious HCMV in human astrocytoma and skin fibroblast (SF) cells were analysed. HCMV envelope glycoproteins synthesized in astrocytoma cells had lower Mrs than the same glycoproteins synthesized in SF cells regardless of the strain of HCMV used, showing that the differences observed were due to differe...

Antisera were prepared by immunization of apparently purified S-glycoproteins; one from an S allele of Brassica campestris and two from S alleles of B. oleracea. Each antiserum was reactive not only with the homologous S-glycoprotein but also with the heterologous ones, i.e. with the S-glycoproteins of the other S alleles of the same locus. In double diffusion tests, a spur against the heterolo...

Glycoproteins play important roles in a wide variety of biological processes. The change in the concentration levels has been associated with many cancers, as well as other diseases. Thus, rapid, sensitive and selective determination of glycoproteins is much preferred. In this work, we reported a sandwich-type electrochemical biosensor based on dual-amplification of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid...

We investigated the presence of glycoproteins in Borrelia burgdorferi. We did not find any evidence for glycosylation of the major outer membrane proteins OspA and OspB or the structural flagellar proteins FlaB and FlaA. We suggest that glycoproteins present on the surface of B. burgdorferi may be tightly bound culture medium glycoproteins.

Enveloped animal viruses enter host cells either by direct fusion at neutral pH or by endocytosis. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is believed to fuse with the plasma membrane of cells at neutral pH, and the glycoproteins gB and gD have been implicated in virus entry and cell fusion. Using cloned gB or gD genes, we show that cells expressing HSV-1 glycoproteins gB or gD can undergo fusion to form po...
