The Bell Curve revives and elaborates an argument given by Jensen to the effect that facts about heritability of IQ in whites dictate that blacks are genetically inferior in IQ. But clarification of the concept of heritability shows that this reasoning is fallacious. Heritability is an uninteresting measure that only misleads us about race.

BACKGROUND The objective was to estimate the heritability for height and weight during fetal life and early childhood in two independent studies, one including parent and singleton offsprings and one of mono- and dizygotic twins. METHODS This study was embedded in the Generation R Study (n = 3407, singletons) and the Netherlands Twin Register (n = 33694, twins). For the heritability estimates...

Genome-wide significant associations generally explain only a small proportion of the narrow-sense heritability of complex disease (h). While considerably more heritability is explained by all genotyped SNPs (hg ), for most traits, much heritability remains missing (hg 2 < h). Rare variants, poorly tagged by genotyped SNPs, are a major potential source of the gap between hg 2 and h. Recent effo...

Osteochondrosis (OC) is an important orthopedic developmental disorder in many horse populations. A review of the literature revealed widely variable heritability estimates for the disorder. We estimated the genetic variables (heritabilities and genetic correlations) of various manifestations of OC. Femoropatellar, tarsocrural, and metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints of 811 rando...

The Regression of Offspring on Mid-Parent (ROMP) method is a test of association between a quantitative trait and a candidate locus. ROMP estimates the trait heritability and the heritability attributable to a locus and requires genotyping the offspring only. In this study, the theory underlying ROMP was revised (ROMP(rev)) and extended. Computer simulations were used to determine the type I er...

Heritability estimation has become an important tool for imaging genetics studies. The large number of voxel- and vertex-wise measurements in imaging genetics studies presents a challenge both in terms of computational intensity and the need to account for elevated false positive risk because of the multiple testing problem. There is a gap in existing tools, as standard neuroimaging software ca...

Set point viral load in HIV patients ranges over several orders of magnitude and is a key determinant of disease progression in HIV. A number of recent studies have reported high heritability of set point viral load implying that viral genetic factors contribute substantially to the overall variation in viral load. The high heritability is surprising given the diversity of host factors associat...

OBJECTIVE We investigated gene-environment interactions (GxE) for associations between parental divorce and disordered eating (DE). METHOD Participants were 1,810 female twins from the Michigan State University Twin Registry and the Minnesota Twin Family Study. The Minnesota Eating Behaviors Survey was used to assess DE. We tested for GxE by comparing the heritability of DE in twins from divo...

in order to determine combining ability, heritability and heterosis of some agronomic traits in rice, 4 pure lines were crossed with 2 cytoplasmic male sterile testers. parents and their f1 progenies arranged in rcb design with three replications. analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for all traits, except for filled grains/panicle. furthermore, the crosses effect...

The relative proportions of genetic and environmental variance in behavioral measures have been studied extensively. A growing body of literature has examined changes in heritability measures over time, but we are unaware of any prior efforts to assess developmental heritability changes for multiple behavioral phenotypes using multiple data sources. We have chosen to explore the proportional ge...
