In recent decades, the world has experienced unprecedented urban growth which endangers the green environment in and around urban areas. In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN) based model is developed to predict future impacts of urban and agricultural expansion on the uplands of Deepor Beel, a Ramsar wetland in the city area of Guwahati, Assam, India, by 2025 and 2035 respectively. S...

We present a maximum entropy classifier that significantly improves the accuracy of Argumentative Zoning in scientific literature. We examine the features used to achieve this result and experiment with Argumentative Zoning as a sequence tagging task, decoded with Viterbi using up to four previous classification decisions. The result is a 23% F-score increase on the Computational Linguistics co...

This paper proposes to investigate the impact of …nancialization on energy markets (oil, gas, coal and electricity European forward prices) during both normal times and extreme ‡uctuation periods through an original behavioral and emotional approach. To this aim, we propose a new theoretical and empirical framework based on a heterogeneous agents model in which fundamentalists and chartists co-...

We consider the problem of describing the possible spectra of an acoustic operator with a periodic finite-gap density. We construct flows on the moduli space of algebraic Riemann surfaces that preserve the periods of the corresponding operator. By a suitable extension of the phase space, these equations can be written with quadratic irrational-ities.

We study the impact on productivity of specific operating practices currently used by demand responsive transit (DRT) providers. We investigate the effect of using a zoning vs. a no-zoning strategy and time-window settings on performance measures such as total trip miles, deadhead miles and fleet size. It is difficult to establish closed form expressions to assess the impact on the performance ...

1. INTRODUCTION The present study advocates a strategy aimed at implementing the principles of sustainable development through operational tools to be used in programs for environmental conservation. To be more precise, I lay out a proposal of participatory zoning that is innovative in two main respects: i) it is based on an assessment of the territorial setup and the social values of the peopl...

This paper concerns the problem of matching incompatible zonal geographies, for example in the context of comparing census outputs over time. The automated zoning procedure (AZP) proposed by Openshaw (1977) is reviewed, and a population stress statistic proposed which may be used in an AZP algorithm in order to maximise the match between two zonal geographies. An implementation of this approach...

Background and purpose: Irrational health beliefs are recognized as one of the main variables in healthy lifestyle. Despite the leading role of dysfunctional assumptions such as irrational health beliefs in healthy behaviors and lifestyle, there is no appropriate scale for their assessment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Irrational Health Belief ...

In this paper we investigate whether unsupervised models can be used to induce conventional aspects of rhetorical language in scientific writing. We rely on the intuition that the rhetorical language used in a document is general in nature and independent of the document’s topic. We describe a Bayesian latent-variable model that implements this intuition. In two empirical evaluations based on t...
