introduction: esophageal cancer is a common gastro intestinal malignancy. one of the most common techniques of surgery in esophageal cancer is transhiatal esophagectomy with esophagogastric anastomosis in the neck. this technique is accompanied by complications like chronic gastero-esophegeal reflux and late stenosis. this study was designed to compare the risk of complications after two surgic...
Background &Aim: The endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach has been widely employed as a treatment for pituitary adenomas and other parasellar tumors. However, the major concerns related to endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery include the risks of CSF leak post-operatively leading to morbidity and at times mortality due to severe meningitis. Several studies in the past have foun...
Persistent air leaks occur after Spontaneous pneumothorax both primary and secondary, and after lungs trauma and lung surgeries are sever problems encountered chest surgeons with. Persistent air leak causes longer patients hospitalization. Materials and Methods: We used autologous blood pleurodesis in patients with persistent air leak for 30patients with more than 8 days air leaks, during a th...
Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has recently been introduced as a palliative treatment for patients with severe emphysema. The most common postoperative complication is persistent air leak requiring prolonged tube thoracostomy. We describe a unique case of a patient with severe emphysema who underwent LVRS and presented, about a year later, with the repeated expectoration of surgical staples.
OBJECTIVE Accurate ear-canal acoustic measurements, such as wideband acoustic admittance, absorbance, and otoacoustic emissions, require that the measurement probe be tightly sealed in the ear canal. Air leaks can compromise the validity of the measurements, interfere with calibrations, and increase variability. There are no established procedures for determining the presence of air leaks or cr...
BACKGROUND The conventional sequence when using supraglottic airway devices is insertion, cuff inflation and fixation. Our hypothesis was that a tighter fit of the cuff and tip could be achieved with a consequently lower incidence of air leak, better separation of gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts and less airway morbidity if the device were first affixed and the cuff then inflated. MET...
