Direct measurements of the air–sea turbulent fluxes of momentum and heat, along with surface currents, waves and supporting meteorological variables, were acquired during a recent field campaign. Surface currents, measured from a very high frequency radar, were found to steer the stress away from the mean wind direction. Although this effect has been reported in a recent scatterometer study, th...

this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.

Frequency-domain and time-domain processing approaches to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for multiple broadband far field signals using beamspace preprocessing structures are proposed. The technique is based on constant mainlobe response beamforming. A set of frequency-domain and time-domain beamformers with constant (frequency independent) mainlobe response and controlled sidelobes is d...

A scanning spectral photometer is deployed on a rigid coastal ocean platform to measure upwelling solar radiances from the sea surface at nine elevation angles spanning 150 degrees of azimuth. Measured radiance distributions at 500 nm wavelength have been compared with traditional model simulations employing the Cox and Munk distribution of wave slopes. The model captures the general features o...

Rice is one of the major crops cultivated predominantly in flooded paddies, thus a large amount of water is consumed during its growing season. Accurate paddy rice maps are therefore important inputs for improved estimates of actual evapotranspiration in the agricultural landscape. The main objective of this study was to obtain flooded paddy rice maps using multi-temporal images of Moderate Res...

In various communications-based adaptive array applications, the directions of arrival (DOAs) of the desired user signal are sparsely separated. As such, the desired beam-pattern has a sparse structure. We propose an NLMS based adaptive algorithm which exploits this sparse DOA structure and provides significantly improved convergence speeds.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of the presence of interfering radar on the target direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performed by the reference radar. The analyzed estimators are the pseudo-monopulse and the maximum likelihood techniques. The importance of the use of codes in multi-user radar system is highlighted in a simple scenario of two radars by calculating the root-mean squa...

SUMMARY A novel method for automatically creating an optimum direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for a given radio environment using a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. DOA estimation algorithms are generally described by parameters and operators. The performance of a DOA estimation algorithm is evaluated using root mean square error (RMSE) through computer simulations. A GA searc...

We present a global Ziv-Zakai-type lower bound on the mean square error for estimation of signal parameter vectors, where some components of the distortion function may be periodic. Periodic distortion functions arise naturally in the context of direction of arrival or phase estimation problems. The bound is applied to an image registration problem, and compared to the performance of the Maximu...
