INTRODUCTION Meningococcal meningitis now represents a significant public health problem, not only in developing countries but also in developed ones. The disease usually occurs sporadically, and much less in smaller epidemics. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of meningococcal meningitis in the area of Zenica-Doboj Canton in the five-year pe...
We analyzed results of recent microbiologic surveillance of meningitis in northern Cameroon. During the 2007 and 2008 meningitis seasons, all 57 identified meningococcal isolates were serogroup W135. This situation might indicate that the area is experiencing a period between epidemic waves due to 2 different clones of serogroup A meningococci.
Introduction Neisseria Meningitidis is the greatest risk to young adults for fatal meningitis. It has been seen in other studies that smokers carry an increased amount of this bacteria and can be carriers for the infection. The aim of the study is to determine whether the smoking legislation brought into the UK has had an effect on the case numbers of meningococcal meningitis, as smoking in see...
The recent emergence of Neisseria meningitidis W135 as a cause of epidemic bacterial meningitis and the availability of a trivalent ACW135 vaccine have created a need for accurate and timely meningococcal serogroup determination for organization of epidemic vaccine response. The sensitivity and specificity of the Pastorex meningitis kit (Bio-Rad) to identify serogroups A and W135 in the African...
Among 139 patients with suspected bacterial meningitis in Ethiopia, 2012-2013, meningococci (19.4%) and pneumococci (12.9%) were the major disease-causing organisms. Meningococcal serogroups detected were A (n = 11), W (n = 7), C (n = 1), and X (n = 1). Affordable, multivalent meningitis vaccines for the African meningitis belt are urgently needed.
Cerebrospinal fluid from patients with pyogenic meningitis was found to be chemotactic for polymorphonuclear neutrophil leucocytes. No significant difference was found between the mean chemotactic activity of cerebrospinal fluid obtained from patients with pneumococcal meningitis or meningococcal meningitis. The chemotactic factor present in cerebrospinal fluid is probably a low molecular weigh...
Apart from meningococcal disease in the sub-Saharan meningitis belt, the incidence and impact of life-threatening bacterial diseases in children across Africa have not been quantified. The clinical and epidemiological data on pneumococcal, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and other forms of bacterial meningitis, as well as data on other severe bacterial infections throughout the continent w...
INTRODUCTION Neisseria meningitidis is one of the leading causes of bacterial meningitis. In 2013, an increase in invasive disease caused by N. meningitidis serogroup B occurred in Cartagena, Colombia. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to characterize serogroup B isolates recovered from patients with meningococcal meningitis in Cartagena during 2012 and 2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-...
BACKGROUND The epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in the African meningitis belt is characterised by seasonality, localised epidemics and epidemic waves. To facilitate research and surveillance, we aimed to develop a definition for localised epidemics to be used in real-time surveillance based on weekly case reports at the health centre level. METHODS We used national routine surveillan...
Background and purpose: Literature review indicates that antibiotic resistance of bacteria may be associated with the resistance to host natural immunity. In the previous study we found that: all meningococcal isolates of meningitis cases are less sensitive to typical anti-meningococcal antibiotics. In present study, the association of the above characters was analyzed in an ex-vivo “case-co...
