A bilayered ZnO photoanode was constructed for dye-sensitized solar cells with a high conversion efficiency of 4.0%. One layer made of ZnO nanocrystallites increases dye adsorption, and the other consisting of ZnO nanorod aggregates provides a directed electron pathway for the electron transport together with a prominent aggregation-induced light scattering.

To improve the optoelectronic properties of hematite film as a photoanode, hematite film was orientated on the (012) plane by the secondary growth of organized microcrystals. The resultant film showed promising photoelectrochemical effects compared with a randomly oriented one, with a maximum photocurrent of 0.8 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE under the illumination of 1 sun.

A C3N4-sensitized TiO2 nanotube array-based photoanode was designed and fabricated via the in situ growth of C3N4 on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes. It shows stable and significantly improved PEC activity for hydrogen generation under visible light irradiation with a hydrogen production rate of about 19.1 μmol h(-1) (a Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100%).
