Rapid methods of identifying Lancefield group B streptococci were compared to the standard Fuller's extraction method. Such tests as sodium hippurate hydrolysis, bile tolerance, aesculin hydrolysis, pyruvate fermentation, Camp factor, pigmentation, and bacitracin haemolysis were tested on both routine clinical specimens and National Collection of Type Culture strains. The results show that pigm...

Precursors of methane formation by cell-free extracts of the obligat,c anacrobc, Methanobacillus omelianskii, include carbon dioxide, pyruvate, and serine (1). Recently, methylcobalamin, CH,-Bil (2-4), and N”-methyltetrahydrofolate, 5-CH3-H4-folate, have been shown to be substrates for cell-free methane formation (5). This communication is concerned with the role of tetrahydrofolate, H1-folate,...

Glutamine Synthetase from Bacillus brevis Bb G1was purified from pyruvate grown cells(GSpyr). The effect of ligands on the tryptophan fluorescence of the purified enzyme GSpyrwas investigated. With increasing concentrations of Lglutamine or glycine in GSpyr, a shift in emission maximum, change in fluorescence intensity and change in life times were observed compared to the emission maximum,fluore...

Worldwide usage of platinum group metals is increasing, prompting new recovery technologies. Resting cells of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans reduced soluble Pd2+ to elemental, cell-bound Pd0 supported by pyruvate, formate, or H2 as the electron donor without biochemical cofactors. Pd reduction was O2 insensitive, opening the way for recycling and recovery of Pd under oxic conditions.

Further modifications of the enzymatic technique for the preparation of isolated, intact, parenchymal cells from rat liver as previously described by this laboratory are presented together with a detailed account of several critical factors involved during the procedure. In addition, the fine structure of the cells as revealed by electron microscopy and the characteristics of their respiratory ...

Rat brain pyruvate carboxylase was purified 2000-fold and some of its properties and kinetic parameters were investigated. The use of (NH4)2SO4 gradient solubilization on a Celite column and precipitation with polyethylene glycol permitted purification to an estimated 20% purity. Except for a few subtle kinetic differences this enzyme is indistinguishable from rat liver pyruvate carboxylase.

The active species of “COP,” i.e. CO2 or HCO,, utilized in the pyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolypruvate carboxylase reaction have been determined with an assay predicated upon the fact that the hydration of CO2 is a kinetically slow and measurable reaction. The results of these assays in both cases are in reasonable agreement with those expected if HCOIis assumed to be the functional specie...

A range of enantiomerically pure (R)- and (S)-configured chiral amines has been prepared in excellent e.e. (99%) by combining a transaminase enzyme with an amino acid oxidase and catalytic quantities of pyruvate.

A series of neutral thiourea receptors were found to mediate the antiport of chloride with a range of biologically relevant carboxylate anions across phospholipid bilayers. Simple structural modification of the carriers resulted in a change in the lactate/pyruvate transport selectivity.

In a previous study the authors (Henry et al., 1948) reported on some of the effects of streptomycin (SM) on the metabolism of resting cells of Staphylococcus aureus, BaciUus cereus, and Shigella sonnei. It was found that SM inhibited the oxidation of certain carbohydrates and carbohydrate intermediates by susceptible strains of these organisms, but had no inhibitory effect on resistant strains...
