The layout of beam delivery and/or beam forming optical systems is a recurring task in development and application of laser systems and necessarily requires adequate simulation tools. Accurate and precise simulation of the propagation of laser beams through optical systems, with the aim of predicting the beam profile at desired locations, is challenging. It requires detailed characterization of...

A noise reduction scheme for long haul fiber amplitude modulation (AM) systems is proposed and analyzed. Such systems suffer from intensity noise which results from interference between the (twice) Rayleigh scattered light and the directly transmitted beam. This interference converts the fundamental phase noise of the laser to intensity noise. We show that a strong phase modulation of the outpu...

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 ± 1.6 photons per MeV.

In this paper, the flexural free vibrations of three dimensional micro beams are investigated based on strain gradient theory. The most general form of the strain gradient theory which contains five higher-order material constants has been applied to the micro beam to take the small-scale effects into account. Having considered the Euler-Bernoulli beam model, governing equations of motion are w...

this study deals with the applications of a trigonometric shear deformation theory considering the effect of the transverse shear deformation on the static flexural analysis of the soft core sandwich beams. the theory gives realistic variation of the transverse shear stress through the thickness, and satisfies the transverse shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the bea...

This study is a linear stability analysis of the flows induced by ultrasound acoustic waves (Eckart streaming) within an infinite horizontal fluid layer heated from below. We first investigate the dependence of the instability threshold on the normalized acoustic beam width H(b) for an isothermal fluid layer. The critical curve, given by the critical values of the acoustic streaming parameter, ...

Deflection analysis of a simply supported microbeam subjected to a concentrated load at the middle is investigated on the basis of a shear deformable beam theory and non-classical theory. Effects of shear deformation and small size are taken into consideration by hyperbolic shear deformable beam theory and modified strain gradient theory, respectively. The governing differential equations and c...

In this paper, the mechanical behavior of three-phase inhomogeneous materials is modeled using the meso-scale model with lattice beams for static and dynamic analyses. The Timoshenko beam theory is applied instead of the classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the mechanical properties of lattice beam connection are derived based on the continuum medium using the non-local continuum theory. T...

Bound state perturbation theory applies to the bound states of perturbed systems, for which the energy levels are discrete and separated from one another. The system may also have a continuous spectrum, but the interest is attached to the discrete states. The effects of perturbations on states of the continuous spectrum, or on discrete states imbedded in the continuum, require different techniq...
