For the detection of contaminations in urban water supply networks we introduce a continuous optimal control model governed by partial differential equations. We derive a linear mixedinteger model by discretization of the dynamics of the partial differential equations and by approximations to the cost functional. Finally, we present numerical results for artificial and real-world networks.
the west of esfahan province, iran, is one of the most important agricultural areas throughout the country due to the climate variability and life-giving water of zayanderood river. rice is one of the major and economic crops in this area. the most important climatic elements in agricultural activities which should be considered include temperature, relative humidity, precipitation and wind. so...
the three practical steps that are need to be taken by government agencies in order to increase irrigation efficiency include economic motivation for optimization of water use, modification of existing irrigation systems in the short term and modernization of traditional methods in the long-term plan. the present research aims at identifying farmers' knowledge regarding irrigation and water iss...
Computational Intelligence techniques have been proposed as an efficient tool for modeling and forecasting in recent years and in various applications. Water is a basic need and as a result, water supply entities have the responsibility to supply clean and safe water at the rate required by the consumer. It is therefore necessary to implement mechanisms and systems that can be employed to predi...
Introduction The strategy document « Vision Energétique de la Suisse en 2050 », established by the Center for Energy Policy and Economics of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ), reveals the first impacts of climate change and underlines the fact, that the increasing energy consumption will influence the climate irreversibly in next few years and generate tremendous social, ecological a...
In many urban areas of the developing world, piped water is supplied only intermittently, as valves direct water to different parts of the water distribution system at different times. The flow is transient, and may transition between free-surface and pressurized, resulting in complex dynamical features with important consequences for water suppliers and users. Here, we develop a computational ...
In this paper we propose a mathematical programming model for a large drinking water supply network and discuss some possible extensions. The proposed optimization model is of a real water distribution network, the largest water supply network in Flanders. The problem is nonlinear, nonconvex and involves some binary variables, making it belong to the class of NP-hard problems. We discuss a way ...
The control of water leaks in water distribution networks represents a critical issue for all utilities involved in drinking water supply. This paper deals with the detection of water leaks by using vibration monitoring techniques. The long-term objective is the development of a system for the automatic early detection of burst leaks in service pipes. An experimental campaign was started in ord...
Abstract: Ensuring access to water and sanitation for all is Goal No. 6 of the 17 UN Sustainability Development Goals to transform our world. As one step towards this goal, we present an approach that leverages remote sensing data to plan optimal water supply networks for informal urban settlements. The concept focuses on slums within large urban areas, which are often characterized by a lack o...
