In numerical computations of astrophysical flows one frequently has to deal with situations which require the use of a corotating coordinate system. Then, in addition to the centrifugal force, the Coriolis terms have to be included in the Navier-Stokes equations. In usual numerical treatments of solving the equations of motion these non-inertial forces are included explicitly as source terms. I...

Higdon-type non-reflecting boundary conditions (NRBCs) are developed for the 2-D linearized Euler equations with Coriolis forces. This implementation is applied to a simplified form of the equations, with the NRBCs applied to all four sides of the domain. We demonstrate the validity of the NRBCs to high order. We close with a list of areas for further research. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Using a simple model we investigate how the flow field in a contact binary can alter its topology under the influence of Coriolis forces. In the case studied, closed streamlines form over a relatively large area. This result causes us to review critically the argument that all surface streamlines can meet in a stagnation point, leading to a constant Jacobi energy over the whole surface. A gener...

In order to study the dynamic behavior of ships navigating in severe environmental conditions it is imperative to develop their governing equations of motion taking into account the inherent nonlinearity of large-amplitude ship motion. The purpose of this paper is to present the coupled nonlinear equations of motion in heave, roll, and pitch based on physical grounds. The ingredients of the for...

A comprehensive hydrodynamic model, COMCOT-S, has been aimed at transport reversal in the Taiwan Strait during the period of Typhoon KROSA in 2007. The numerical model is originally based on COMCOT, and a parametric wind model with atmospheric sub-model is imbedded in COMCOT-S for simulating the typhoon-induced currents. The transport characteristics through the Taiwan Strait under the influenc...

The accelerating fields (e. g. centrifugal acceleration and constant acceleration) can change the physical performance of nano-sensors significantly. Herein, a new size-dependent model is developed to investigate the scale-dependent dynamic behavior of nanowire-fabricated sensor operated in an accelerating field. The scale-dependent equation of motion is developed by employing a consolidation o...
