Background and purpose: Fungemia is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients such as severe burns. Due to low sensitivity and long turnaround time of the traditional biphasic BHI blood culture to detect fungemia we aimed to detect fungal elements in blood culture of these patients suspected with invasive fungal disease (IFDs) using panfungal PCR assay. ...
Fungal infections have become an important cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized children due to many complicating and underlying conditions. We present the case of a newborn infant with fungemia due to Kodamaea ohmeri who had a good outcome of the infection after using the combination of antifungal treatment and central venous catheter removal.
Disseminated fungal infection is the presence of a pathogen in blood (fungemia) and/or any other deep-seated site because hematogenous seeding. Conditions which predispose individuals for disseminated infections include renal failure, following surgical procedures, HIV, neutropenia, hematological malignancies, and long term use antibiotics, late sepsis total parenteral nutrition. Candida common...
The first outbreak of Candida haemulonii fungemia is described. The seven isolates from the blood of four neonates were identified by DNA sequencing of the ribosomal DNA. They were all resistant to amphotericin B, fluconazole, and itraconazole. This report highlights the emergence of C. haemulonii as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients.
We report a fatal case of disseminated Emmonsia sp. infection in a 55-year-old man who received an orthotopic liver transplant. The patient had pneumonia and fungemia, and multisystem organ failure developed. As human habitats and the number of immunocompromised patients increase, physicians must be aware of this emerging fungal infection.
A case of fungemia with interstitial lung compromise caused by Malassezia sympodialis is reported in an obese pediatric patient on long-term treatment with inhaled corticosteroids for asthma. The patient was hospitalized due to a post-surgical complication of appendicitis. The patient was treated with amphotericin B for 3 weeks, with good clinical evolution and subsequent negative cultures.
We describe a case of breakthrough Candida parapsilosis fungemia in an 80-year-old woman with pyoderma gangrenosum and rheumatoid arthritis. C. parapsilosis was detected in blood culture while the patient was treated with micafungin for a Candida glabrata bloodstream infection. The breakthrough infection was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B.
