If a discrete subset S of a topological group G with the identity 1 generates a dense subgroup of G and S ∪ {1} is closed in G, then S is called a suitable set for G. We apply Michael’s selection theorem to offer a direct, self-contained, purely topological proof of the result of Hofmann and Morris [8] on the existence of suitable sets in locally compact groups. Our approach uses only elementar...

This paper presents and describes a quotient of the Artin braid group by commutators of transversal half-twists and investigates its group actions. We denote the quotient by B̃n and refer to the groups which admit an action of B̃n as B̃n-groups. The group B̃n is an extension of a solvable group by a symmetric group. We distinguish special elements in B̃n-groups which we call prime elements and we gi...

In this note the Stone-Cech compactification is used to produce short proofs of two theorems on the structure of free topological groups. The first is: The free topological group on any Tychonoff space X contains, as a closed subspace, a homeomorphic copy of the product space X". This is a generalization of a result of B. V. S. Thomas. The second theorem proved is C. Joiner's, Fundamental Lemma.

Fix a finite set of points in Euclidean n-space En, thought of as a point-cloud sampling of a certain domainD ⊂ En. The Rips complex is a combinatorial simplicial complex based on proximity of neighbors that serves as an easily-computed but high-dimensional approximation to the homotopy type of D. There is a natural “shadow” projection map from the Rips complex to En that has as its image a mor...

This is the next article in a series devoted to the homotopy theory (following [11] and [12]). The concept of fundamental groups of pointed topological spaces has been introduced. Isomorphism of fundamental groups defined with respect to different points belonging to the same component has been stated. Triviality of fundamental group(s) of R n has been shown. the terminology and notation for th...
