با انجام واکسیناسیون روتین تمام زنان جوان بر علیه روبلا (سرخجه) شیوع سندرم مادر زادی روبلا بطور چشمگیری کاهش یافته، در نتیجه امروزه عفونت مادر زادی CMV بعنوان شایعترین عامل عفونی که سبب صدمات جدی در جنین می شود مطرح می باشد. سیتو مگالو ویروس شایعترین عامل ویروسی عفونت داخل رحمی در آمریکا و انگلیس به شمار می آید و مهمترین فاکتور شناخته شده در رابطه با عقب ماندگی و کری مادر زادی است.
