We investigated the combined moisturizing effect of liposomal serine and a cosmeceutical base selected in this study. Serine is a major amino acid consisting of natural moisturizing factors and keratin, and the hydroxyl group of serine can actively interact with water molecules. Therefore, we hypothesized that serine efficiently delivered to the stratum corneum (SC) of the skin would enhance th...

Neoagarobiose, a disaccharide, showed a higher hygroscopic ability than glycerol or hyaluronic acid, typical moisturizing reagents. Beside, neoagarobiose whitened B16 murine melanoma cells, and showed low cytotoxicity. Therefore neoagarobiose was a rare reagent showing both moisturizing and whitening effects.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The research on the treatment of "dry skin syndrome" is hampered by the lack of a suitable animal model. Formerly, we developed a validated guinea pig in vivo model in which the dry skin syndrome persists at least for 1 week. We can, therefore, compare the pharmacological effectiveness of known and potential moisturizers for the treatment of dry skin syndrome. Our aim is to stud...

A retrospective study was performed on potbellied pigs with skin disease over a 22-year period. Thirteen of 190 pigs (7%) were examined by the Dermatology Service. Three different dermatoses were diagnosed: (1) sarcoptic mange, (2) yeast dermatitis of the eyelids (blepharitis) and periocular skin, and (3) presumed ichthyosis. Sarcoptic mange was cured with ivermectin injections. Yeast dermatiti...

The long term moisturizing effect of ten different skin care products was tested on 22 female volunteers using a low frequency electrical bioimpedance instrument. We found large differences in the moisturizing effect between different products and also large interpersonal variations. Products which gave a large increase in skin hydration on one person could have no effect on another person. The...

Xerosis is a common skin condition, occurring most often in the winter and in low relative humidity, which results in loss of moisture, cracking, and desquamation. Many emollient creams and lotions are available for use as preventive moisturizers. However, few controlled experiments have been published comparing the efficacy of active moisturizing products versus the vehicle used to deliver the...
