Carbapenem resistance in Gram-negative bacteria is on the rise in the United States. A regional network was established to study microbiological and genetic determinants of clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients with carbapenem-resistant (CR) Klebsiella pneumoniae in a prospective, multicenter, observational study. To this end, predefined clinical characteristics and outcomes were recorded ...

We used meropenem to successfully treat a patient with bacteremia due to ceftazidime-avibactam-resistant, meropenem- susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae that carried mutant blaKPC-3. Meropenem was bactericidal against ceftazidime-avibactam- resistant K pneumoniae isolates in vitro. Nevertheless, the role of carbapenems in treating such infections remains uncertain, because meropenem resistance is...

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of a sequence type 111 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain isolated in 2014 from a patient at the NIH Clinical Center. This P. aeruginosa strain exhibits pan-drug resistance and harbors the blaKPC-2 gene, encoding the Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase enzyme, on a plasmid.

Klebsiella pneumoniae strains coharboring KPC and VIM carbapenemases have been reported, to the best of our knowledge, only in Greece (1–5) and Germany (6). The coexpression of these two resistance determinants poses a major threat to antibiotic utility worldwide. Herein we report, for the first time in the Americas, a K. pneumoniae isolate harboring blaKPC and blaVIM genes. In September 2010, ...

Intended Goal: The isolate in this specimen was a carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae with resistance mediated by the blaKPC. It was chosen to emphasize the urgent infection control and prevention situation that these organisms present when identified. It was also chosen to illustrate the challenges laboratorians face with the ever-changing antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) b...

The complete and annotated nucleotide sequence of a 54,036-bp plasmid harboring a blaKPC-2 gene that is clonally present in Citrobacter isolates from different species is presented. The plasmid belongs to incompatibility group N (IncN) and harbors the class A carbapenemase KPC-2 in a unique genetic environment.

Escherichia coli Ec36 was recovered from a patient in Portugal after treatment with meropenem and colistin. Besides an IncF plasmid with Tn1441d-blaKPC-3, already reported in clinical strains in this country, E. coli Ec36 co-harbored an IncX4::mcr-1 gene. Results highlight emerging co-resistance to carbapenems and polymyxins after therapy with drugs from both classes.

The aim of the study was to assess the epidemiology, the incidence of multidrug-resistant bacteria and bloodstream infections' (BSIs) seasonality in a university hospital. This retrospective study was carried out in the University General Hospital of Patras, Greece, during 2011-13 y. Blood cultures from patients with clinical presentation suggestive of bloodstream infection were performed by th...
