Canine parvovirus (CPV) infections occurred in 5 of 35 South American canids at the Department of Conservation (DC), a breeding facility of the National Zoological Park in Front Royal, Va. The clinical signs were anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, and vomiting. Three of the affected canids survived and had high hemagglutination-inhibition titers to CPV in the recovery period. Necropsy of the 2 that ...
background: the present study was aimed to elucidate the status of intestinal helminth infections in canids of moghan plain, northwestern iran. methods: eighty-five intestine samples from dead or shot wild canids, 59 fecal samples from sheepdogs and 5 from red foxes were collected from 2006 to 2008 and examined in parasitology department of pasteur institute of iran. results: generally, adult...
background: despite echinococcus granulosus , there are merely two old reports of e. multilocularis in-fection among iranian canids of moghan plain, the only area known endemic for the species. we detected specific dna markers in fecal samples by pcr (copro-pcr) for differential diagnosis of echinococcus species in living canids. methods: totally 144 fecal samples from domestic dogs, red foxes ...
Echinococcus multilocularis is a zoonotic parasite in wild canids. We determined its frequency in urban coyotes (Canis latrans) in Alberta, Canada. We detected E. multilocularis in 23 of 91 coyotes in this region. This parasite is a public health concern throughout the Northern Hemisphere, partly because of increased urbanization of wild canids.
We have reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of 23 species in the dog family, Canidae, using DNA sequence data from six nuclear loci. Individual gene trees were generated with maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML) analysis. In general, these individual gene trees were not well resolved, but several identical groupings were supported by more than one locus. Phylogenetic anal...
background: the present study was carried out to describe the epidemio-logical aspects of gastrointestinal helminthic infections of canids in chahar-mahal and bakhtiari province, the central western part of iran . methods: forty nine canid species including , dogs, jackals, foxes and wolves were included in this study. the contents of their alimentary canal were in-spected in order to isolate a...
Rabies is a widespread disease in African domestic dogs and certain wild canine populations. Canine rabies became established in Africa during the 20th century, coinciding with ecologic changes that favored its emergence in canids. I present a conceptual and terminologic framework for understanding rabies ecology in African canids. The framework is underpinned by 2 distinct concepts: maintenanc...
The domestic dog varies remarkably in cranial morphology. In fact, the differences in size and proportion between some dog breeds are as great as those between many genera of wild canids. In this study, I compare patterns of intracranial allometry and morphologic diversity between the domestic dog and wild canid species. The results demonstrate that the domestic dog is morphologically distinct ...
This study explores the elationship between the genus Canis and hunteregatherers through a case study of prehistoric Native Americans in the San Francisco Bay-Sacramento Delta area. A distinctive aspect of the region’s prehistoric record is the interment of canids, variously classified as coyotes, dogs, and wolves. Since these species are difficult to distinguish based solely on morphology, anc...
