In this paper we propose suitable modifications in the concept of Roche equipotential to account for the effects of Coriolis force on its equipotential surface besides the usual effects of gravitational and centrifugal forces and use this in conjunction with Kippenhahn and Thomas, 1970 approach in a manner earlier used by Mohan et al, 1990 to incorporate the effects of Coriolis force in the equ...

a reliability analysis of suspension bridges against buffeting failure due to gustiness of wind velocity is carried out using the concept of pra (probabilistic risk analysis) procedure. for this purpose, the bending stresses at the critical nodes of the bridge deck are obtained for buffeting forces using a spectral analysis technique and a finite element approach. for the purpose of reliability...

In single stage valves, the main spools are stroked directly by solenoid actuators. They are cheaper and more reliable than multistage valves. Their use, however, is restricted to low bandwidth and low flow rate applications due to the limitation of the solenoid actuators. Our research focuses on alleviating the need for large solenoids in single stage valves by advantageously using fluid flow ...

The representation of body orientation and configuration is dependent on multiple sources of afferent and efferent information about ongoing and intended patterns of movement and posture. Under normal terrestrial conditions, we feel virtually weightless and we do not perceive the actual forces associated with movement and support of our body. It is during exposure to unusual forces and patterns...

Reaching movements made to visual targets in a rotating room are initially deviated in path and endpoint in the direction of transient Coriolis forces generated by the motion of the arm relative to the rotating environment. With additional reaches, movements become progressively straighter and more accurate. Such adaptation can occur even in the absence of visual feedback about movement progres...

We demonstrate that a three-terminal harmonic symmetric chain in the presence of a Coriolis force, produced by a rotating platform that is used to place the chain, can produce thermal rectification. The direction of heat flow is reconfigurable and controlled by the angular velocity Ω of the rotating platform. A simple three-terminal triangular lattice is used to demonstrate the proposed principle.

The cylindrical resonator gyroscope (CRG) is a typical Coriolis vibratory gyroscope whose performance is mostly influenced by the damping characteristic of the cylindrical resonator. However, the tremendous damping influences caused by pasting piezoelectric electrodes on the gyroscope, which degrades the performance to a large extent, have rarely been studied. In this paper, the dynamical model...

Sayed, Shehrin. M.S.E.C.E., Purdue University, December 2013. Performance-onDemand MEMS (PODMEMS): Electrical Control of Effective Mass, Damping, and Stiffness. Major Professor: Jason V. Clark. We propose the use of electrostatic force feedback to control the stiffness, damping, or mass of MEMS. If feedback forces are proportional to sensed displacement, velocity, or acceleration of a MEMS proo...
