Ecthyma gangrenosum is a rare skin infection classically associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We performed a retrospective study of all cases diagnosed with ecthyma gangrenosum from 2004-2010 in a university hospital in Mexico (8 cases, 5 female patients and 3 male patients, ages between 4 months and 2 years). The most common risk factor for ecthyma gangrenosum is neutropenia in immunocompro...

INTRODUCTION Ecthyma gangrenosum is known as a characteristic lesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis and is usually seen in immunocompromised patients. CASE PRESENTATION A previously healthy 63-year-old man was admitted with sloughy necrotic ulcerations of the skin over his sternum. He was afebrile and in good condition. A skin biopsy revealed ecthyma gangrenosum. Blood cultures remained ste...

Ecthyma gangrenosum is a characteristic skin lesion of systemic infection due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has a high incidence in patients with chronic disease and impaired defense mechanisms. Early diagnosis and appropriate systemic antibiotic therapy is crucial since its mortality rate is very high. We report a case of ecthyma gangrenosum in aplastic anemia.

Ecthyma gangrenosum is a rare and invasive cutaneous infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the majority of cases, typically affecting immunocompromised patients, particularly those with neutropenia. We report a rare case of ecthyma gangrenosum in the absence of bacteraemia presenting as a solitary necrotic ulcer in a female patient with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. A culture from the ...

A eromonas hydrophila is a motile Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium found in water sources that is typically pathogenic for fish. Although human beings are atypical hosts, A. hydrophila has been reported to cause a broad spectrum of disease syndromes (acute gastroenteritis, soft tissue infections, meningitis, peritonitis, sepsis) [1]. While initially believed to be an opportunistic organism on...

Ecthyma gangrenosum typically occurs in patients who are immunocompromised. It is most often associated with a Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia but other pathogens can be found. We report an HIV-infected patient with disseminated nontuberculous mycobacterial infection who presented with fever, mucous bloody diarrhea and cutaneous lesions on both legs. The cutaneous lesions had ecthyma gangreno...

UNLABELLED Fusarium spp. is an opportunistic mold that causes disseminated infections in immunocompromised patients. It is important to make a definite diagnosis because of high mortality rates. We present the case of a 27-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia with a prolonged febrile neutropenic period. She developed ecthyma gangrenosum-like lesions and simultaneously h...

Ecthyma gangrenosum is a cutaneous lesion often associated with pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia, even though it may develop without bacteremia and may originate from other bacterial and fungal organisms. Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia or sepsis, which mainly affects immunocompromised patients, frequently occurs in hospitals. This lesion typically occurs on the extremities and gluteal and p...

Ecthyma gangrenosum (EG) is a well-described skin lesion classically associated with Pseudomonas septicemia in immunocompromised patients, but may also be caused by other bacterial and fungal organisms [1]. The lesions characteristically appear as small indurated papulovesicles progressing rapidly to necrotic ulcers with surrounding erythema and a central black eschar [2]. Ecthyma gangrenosum i...
