Favism is a life-threatening hemolytic anemia resulting from the intake of fava beans by susceptible individuals with low erythrocytic glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity. However, little is known about the metabolomic changes in plasma and liver after the intake of fava beans in G6PD normal and deficient states. In this study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to anal...

a procedure for the in vitro evaluation of the toxicity of fava beans has been applied to 17 varieties of the bean and one batch of beans purchased on the open market; the latter consisted of unknown varieties. the procedure involves the incubation of a saline extract of the beans with red cells from normal individuals and with red cells from g6pd deficient patients. 2. normal red cells under t...

A 8 month-old infant presented with acute onset of severe jaundice, anemia requiring transfusion and Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency. The infant did not take drugs, he did not consume fava beans, but fava beans DNA was found on pumpkin he consumed the day before jaundice onset. This is the first case of hemolysis triggered by ingestion of food cross-contaminated with fava beans.

Favism is a severe, acute haemolytic anaemia which occurs in about 20% of G6PD deficient subjects after ingestion of fava beans. Since not all G6PD deficient subjects are sensitive to fava beans, the possibility has been suggested that extra erythrocytic factors may play an important role in the susceptibility to haemolytic favism. To test the hypothesis that an autosomal enzyme is involved in ...

INTRODUCTION According to many studies, sprouted fava beans are a rich source of levo-dihydroxy phenylalanine (L-dopa) the precursor of dopamine, and they are now being investigated for use in the management of Parkinson's disease. The addition of Carbidopa (C-dopa) can reduce the daily use of the L-dopa dosage requirements and it can also reduce the side effects which are associated with the L...

By A. SZEINBERG, C. SHEBA, NINA HIRSHORN AND EVA B0D0NYI M OST acquired hemolytic anemias (with the exception of acquired idiopathic hemolytic anemia, incotnpatihle blood transfusions and Rh senzitization) and all cases of thalassemia show in this country a well defined ethnographic distribution. Only Jews originating from oriental and Mediterranean countries who have a da.rker consplexion and ...

Higher-protein meals decrease hunger and increase satiety compared to lower-protein meals. However, no consensus exists about the different effects of animal and vegetable proteins on appetite. We investigated how a meal based on vegetable protein (fava beans/split peas) affected ad libitum energy intake and appetite sensations, compared to macronutrient-balanced, iso-caloric meals based on ani...

The endemic occurrence of favism in certain Mediterranean regions provided an investigative opportunity for testing in vivo the validity of claims as to the role of catalase in protecting human erythrocytes against peroxidative injury. Reduced activity of catalase was found in the erythrocytes of six boys who were deficient in erythrocytic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and who were s...

a GSH instability, as well as a low activity of glucose 6-phosphate-dehydrogenase were demonstrated in those cells (2-5). A similar hereditary abnormality of the erythrocytes has been described in Jews originating from oriental and Mediterranean countries (6-10). It is associated with a susceptibility to hemolysis by various agents such as fava beans, sulpha drugs, para-amino salicylic acid and...
