Streptococcus suis is an important swine pathogen and emerging zoonotic agent worldwide causing meningitis, endocarditis, arthritis and septicemia. Among the 29 serotypes identified to date, serotype 2 is mostly isolated from diseased pigs. Although several virulence mechanisms have been characterized in S. suis, the pathogenesis of S. suis infections remains only partially understood. This stu...

In a mixed continuous culture of Pseudomonas putida VM15A and Pseudomonas sp. strain VM15C with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the sole source of carbon, growth of the PVA-degrading bacterium VM15C and, hence, PVA degradation were limited by the growth factor, pyrroloquinoline quinone, produced by VM15A. Feeding of a carbon source for VM15A, ethanol, with PVA enhanced pyrroloquinoline quinone produ...

Organisms from all domains of life use gene regulation networks to control cell growth, identity, function, and responses to environmental challenges. Although accurate global regulatory models would provide critical evolutionary and functional insights, they remain incomplete, even for the best studied organisms. Efforts to build comprehensive networks are confounded by challenges including ne...

The role of growth factors for the motility and chemotaxis of the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum was determined. Cells of V. anguillarum were chemotactic to serine in the temperature range 5-25 degrees C and in 0.8-2.7 % NaCl. The chemotactic response was significantly higher at 25 degrees C than at 5 or 15 degrees C. Growth in medium with 1.5 % NaCl gave a higher response than growth with 3 ...

background: the anticancer agent imatinib (im) is a small molecular analog ofatp that inhibits tyrosine kinase activity of platelet derived growth factors (pdgfs)and stem cell factor (scf) receptor in cancer cells. however these factors have a keyrole in regulating growth and development of normal sertoli, leydig and germcells.objective: the aim of this study was to determine cell viability, pd...

This study aimed at investigating the antibacterial effects of extracts from leaf, fruit, and stem of Solanum nigrum on fish pathogenic bacteria. The extraction process was done using the rotary device. The leaf methanol extract and the fruit acetone extract (MIC and MBC of 25 and 12.5 ppm, respectively) showed stronger antibacterial properties. The Streptococcus iniae were the most resistant b...

A low molecular weight, iron-binding factor was isolated from horse liver. This host-associated iron transfer factor (HAITF) is capable of binding iron and stimulating bacterial growth by promoting iron uptake into bacteria. Also, when injected into infected animals, HAITF increases the virulence of bacterial infections. HAITF bioactivity is ubiquitous in animal tissues and present in serum. It...

echinoderms are independent and quite special branch of world animals. sea cucumbers are among the strangest members of echinoderm class regarding their structure and physiology. these fauna have been tested with regard to anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-coagulants, anti-virus, cytotoxic, hemolytic and anti-hiv features. in this study, the antibacterial activity of holothuria leucospilota sea...

Background: Melanin is a negative charge hydrophobic complex pigment. Melanin is produced naturally in bacteria to protect them against UV, free radicals and environmental stresses. Pigment production in bacteria has more advantages than other biosources due to its rapid growth, higher efficiency and easier extraction. The aim of this study was the isolation, biochemical and molecular identific...

Biodesulfurization of coal has been carried out in batch culture of single strain and mixed culture of sulfur oxidizing bacteria. The pure cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans utilized inorganic sulfur content of Malaysian coal. The chemolithotroph bacteria were able to grow on coal and metabolize the coal's sulfur content. The batch cultures of coal with 3-5 perce...
