the exact role of the epithelial lining of the trachea in modulating the bronchial tone is controversial. the present study was an attempt to verify the role of both prostaglandins and mast cells in the acute phase of acid inspiration in rat. four groups (n = 6) of n. mari rats were employed. the first group was used as placebo control, and normal saline was injected. to the second group hydroc...

Epithelial damage greatly increases the flux of a low molecular weight tracer 99mtechnetium-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) from tracheal lumen to venous-blood in anaesthetized sheep. We have now investigated whether epithelial damage induced by the detergent, Triton X-100, alters the effects of luminal histamine on blood flow and 99mTc-DTPA flux. The cervical trachea was fill...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Airtraq and CTrach in lean patients with simulated cervical spine injury after application of a rigid cervical collar. Eighty-six consenting adult patients of ASA physical status 1 or 2, who required elective tracheal intubation were included in this study in a randomised manner. Anaesthesia was induced using 1 microg kg(-1) fentany...

A short-term 5-day nose-only cigarette smoke exposure study was conducted in Fisher 344 rats to identify smoke-induced tracheal protein changes. Groups of 10 male and female 5 week old rats were assigned to 1 of 4 exposure groups. Animals received filtered air, or 75, 200 or 400 mg total particulate matter (TPM)/m(3) of diluted 3R4F Kentucky reference cigarette mainstream smoke. Exposures were ...

Continuous control of tracheal tube cuff inflation using a pneumatic device resulted in severe tracheal wall damage in ventilated piglets. This damage was similar in piglets managed with manual control of cuff inflation. The periodic hyperinflation of the tube cuff used in both groups of this study may explain these results. This manoeuvre should be avoided in clinical practice.

Damage to the trachea produced in dogs by large and small residual volume cuffs during 6 h of IPPV was compared using a specially designed endotracheal tube. The cuffs under evaluation were adjusted to exert similar average pressures on the tracheal wall, so that many of the variables believed responsible for tracheal injury were controlled. The true compliance of the cuff was measured with the...

Several reports have shown the various effects of grape (Vitis vinifera) seed extract such as antioxidant, hypotensive, hypolipidemic and vasodilatory effects. The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of grape leaf hydroalcoholic extract on isolated rat tracheal contractions induced by KCl and acetylcholine. The trachea was removed from male adult Sprague-Dawley rat and placed in ...

Total thyroidectomy involving the adjacent structures of the trachea can cause tracheal damage such as early tracheal necrosis. The authors describe the first case of anterior tracheal necrosis following total thyroidectomy treated using vacuum-assisted closure device. After two weeks of VAC  therapy, there was no evidence of ongoing infection and the trachea was partially closed around a trach...

its adjacent structures can cause tracheal damage such as ulceration of the mucosa, tracheal stenosis, tracheoesophageal fistula, tracheomalacia and neck abscess. We describe a case of upper tracheal necrosis as a complication of total thyroidectomy in a hyperthyroid patient, highlighting some of the difficulties presented by a thyrotoxic goitre, which, to our knowledge has not been reported be...
