The effects of bovine skeletal muscle m-calpain and calpastatin on the degradation of casein and isolated bovine myofibrils were characterized under various pH values (7.0, 6.2, 5.7) and ionic strengths (32 to 400 mM KCl) at 25 degrees C. Caseinolytic assays indicated that m-calpain activity increased with increasing pH (P < .01) but decreased with increasing ionic strength (P < .01). Regardles...

The average ionic strength of 20 West Australian soils was found to be 0·0048. The effects of three electrolytes (deionized water, CaCl2 and KN03), three ionic strengths (0'03. 0·005 and soil ionic strength at field capacity, Is) and two soil liquid ratios (1:5 and 1:10) on the pH of 15 soils were investigated. pH measurements in solutions of ionic strength 0·005 differed the least from measure...

Background and purpose: Nitrate is probably the most widespread groundwater contaminant in the world, due to its high water solubility. It imposes a serious threat to human health and contributes to eutrophication. The objectives of this study were set to explore how the factors of ultraviolet light and ionic strength could influence the nano zero valent iron (NZVI) system for nitrate removal. ...

In this research, the protonation constant value of tannic acid was determined at 25 °C and different ionic strengths (0.1 to 0.7 mol/dm3 NaCl) using potentiometric titration technique. The dependence of protonation constant on ionic strength was modeled and discussed by a Debye-Hückel type equation. Then, based on the obtained data from experiments, the minimizing Sum o...

The protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP)-like phytase, PhyAsr, from Selenomonas ruminantium is a novel member of the PTP superfamily, and the only described member that hydrolyzes myo-inositol-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakisphosphate. In addition to the unique substrate specificity of PhyAsr, the phosphate-binding loop (P-loop) has been reported to undergo a conformational change from an open (inactive) to a...

Knowledge of the ionic strength in cells is required to understand the in vivo biochemistry of the charged biomacromolecules. Here, we present the first sensors to determine the ionic strength in living cells, by designing protein probes based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). These probes allow observation of spatiotemporal changes in the ionic strength on the single-cell level.

Hydrodynamic, spectroscopic, and chemical crosslinking studies on monomer chromatin subnits are reported as a function of ionic strength, pH, and temperature. In earlier studies, two salt-dependent conformational transitions were described (Gordon et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, 75, 660, 1978). Transition one occurred between 0.7 and 2.0 mM ionic strength and transition ...

The accuracy of many convenient methods for determining the proportion of hemoglobin A1 to total hemoglobin by ion-exchange chromatography is in question because those methods have not been evaluated against a reference method. In addition, several if not all of these tests are influenced by laboratory temperature. We modified the chromatographic conditions usually used, to arrive at a method t...

With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium, or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high-to-low o...

The flow-injection analysis (FIA) method has long been used for the quantitative determination of b-glucans. FIA makes use of the enhanced fluorescence produced when b-glucan forms complexes with Calcofluor. For successful application of this analysis method, the lowest molecular weight (MW) in the sample has to be higher than a critical MW below which the fluorescence intensity of the complex ...
