the present research investigated the effect of self-regulatory approach (with two components of self-checking and self-efficacy) on pre-intermediate iranian learners' lexical segmentation in listening comprehension via authentic listening comprehension texts. to achieve this purpose, the investigators administered an oxford placement test (2007) to ninety-eight students of two girls’ priv...

We propose and motivate a novel task: paragraph segmentation. We discuss and compare this task with text segmentation and discourse parsing. We present a system that performs the task with high accuracy. A variety of features is proposed and examined in detail. The best models turn out to include lexical, coherence, and structural features.

This paper presents a Bayesian decision framework that performs automatic story segmentation based on statistical modeling of one or more lexical chain features. Automatic story segmentation aims to locate the instances in time where a story ends and another begins. A lexical chain is formed by linking coherent lexical items chronologically. A story boundary is often associated with a significa...

Fundamental frequency (F0) variation is one of a number of acoustic cues normal hearing listeners use for guiding lexical segmentation of degraded speech. This study examined whether F0 contour facilitates lexical segmentation by listeners fitted with cochlear implants (CIs). Lexical boundary error patterns elicited under unaltered and flattened F0 conditions were compared across three groups: ...

Phonotactics refers to the sequential organization of phonological units that are legal in a language (Crystal 1992). However, legal sound sequences do not all occur with the same probability in a language. Phonotactic probability is most often measured in terms of transitional probabilities (TPs) of biphones and has been shown to influence a large range of processes, including infants’ discrim...

This study investigates how French listeners exploit phonological and phonetic cues in segmenting continuous speech into words. We examined how these listeners integrate multiple sources of information not only in lexical identification, using the cross-modal priming paradigm, but also in the storage of new lexical representations, using an artificial language learning task. Results showed that...
