Muscle cramp was induced in one head of the gastrocnemius muscle (GA) in eight of thirteen subjects using maximum voluntary contraction when the muscle was in the shortened position. Cramp in GA was painful, involuntary, and localized. Induction of cramp was indicated by the presence of electromyographic (EMG) activity in one head of GA while the other head remained silent. In all cramping subj...

In this study, the initiation and development of muscle cramp are investigated. For this, we used a 64-channel surface electromyogram (EMG) to study the triceps surae muscle during both cramp and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in four cramp-prone subjects and during cramp only in another four cramp-prone subjects. The results show that cramp presents itself as a contraction of a slowly mov...

In an accompanying paper [2], we developed the Shorten [3] model of skeletal muscle by incorporating equations such as surface calcium fluxes. further research in this paper, succeeded reproducing cramp, well its prevention and reversal, investigating contraction which regulatory networks are involved, using extended comparison with original model. Incorporation data from a traditional medicine...

CONTEXT Electrically induced muscle cramps (EIMC) do not last long enough to study many cramp treatments. Increasing stimulation frequency lengthens cramp duration; it is unknown which frequency elicits the longest EIMC. OBJECTIVE To determine which stimulation frequency elicits the longest EIMC and whether cramp duration and stimulation frequency are correlated. DESIGN Randomized, crossove...

INTRODUCTION Anecdotal evidence suggests that ingesting small volumes of pickle juice relieves muscle cramps within 35 s of ingestion. No experimental evidence exists supporting the ingestion of pickle juice as a treatment for skeletal muscle cramps. METHODS On two different days (1 wk apart), muscle cramps were induced in the flexor hallucis brevis (FHB) of hypohydrated male subjects (approx...

BACKGROUND Oral therapies and chemodenervation procedures are often unrewarding in the treatment of focal, task-specific hand disorders such as writer's cramp or primary writing tremor (PWT). METHODS A portable writing orthotic device (WOD) was evaluated on 15 consecutively recruited writer's cramp and PWT subjects. We measured overall impairment at baseline and after 2 weeks of at-home use w...

Background Leg muscle cramps have been identified as the strongest independent predictor of worse quality of life in Australian children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 1A (CMT1A). There is no accepted treatment for cramp in children with CMT and the cause of cramp is not well understood. Potential therapeutic targets should be carefully identified to direct clinical trials of interventions.
