purpose: to report the refractive changes after intraocular lens (iol) implantation in children with congenital and developmental cataract. methods: in this historical cohort study, the clinical records of children between 2 and 15 years old that had lensectomy with posterior capsulotomy, anterior vitrectomy and iol implantation with more than 5 years of follow-up were studied. refractive error...

AIM To examine the refractive prediction error in high myopic eyes after phacovitrectomy. METHODS This retrospective comparative case series included 91 eyes (18 high myopic eyes and 73 non-high myopic eyes) of 91 patients who underwent successful phacovitrectomy (phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implantation, and pars plana vitrectomy). The high myopic eyes were defined as the eye with ...

Objective To determine the relationship between the preoperative axial length and the myopic shift over 3 years after congenital cataract surgery with primary intraocular lens implantation and other related factors. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, the axial length was measured and assigned into 2 groups (>21.5 mm and ≤21.5 mm), visual axis obscuration, laterality of cataract, age ...

Modern cataract surgery by phacoemulsification is a widely accepted procedure with a rapid recovery time. The prescription of specific intraocular lens, implanted during surgery, makes it possible to anticipate whether the patient will need reading glasses after the procedure. The present study analyses a sample of cataract surgery patients to show the frequency of myopic shifts related to nucl...

PURPOSE To investigate non-cycloplegic changes in refractive error prior to the onset of presbyopia. METHODS The Aston Longitudinal Assessment of Presbyopia (ALAP) study is a prospective 2.5 year longitudinal study, measuring objective refractive error using a binocular open-field WAM-5500 autorefractor at 6-month intervals in participants aged between 33 and 45 years. RESULTS From the 58 p...

PURPOSE We investigated longitudinal changes of refractive error in children with accommodative esotropia (ET) throughout the first 12 years of life, its dependence on age at onset of ET, and whether amblyopia or anisometropia are associated with defective emmetropization. METHODS Longitudinal refractive errors in children with accommodative ET were analyzed retrospectively. Eligibility crite...

For five consecutive eyes from five patients with liquefied aftercataract, Nd:YAG laser treatment significantly reduced high-order aberrations. Two eyes showing a reduction in positive spherical-like aberrations after treatment showed a postoperative myopic shift, while three eyes showing no change in spherical-like aberrations demonstrated hyperopic or only a slight myopic shift.

BACKGROUND Progressive disc tilting and the development or enlargement of peripapillary atrophy (PPA) are observed during a myopic shift in children. This could be related to the changes around the optic nerve head during eyeball elongation. If the biomechanical properties at or around the optic nerve head are changed after exposure to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma eyes, diffe...
