A search for early response genes that are activated following germ cell induction from mouse embryonic stem cells in vitro led us to the isolation of a long noncoding RNA that contains a SINE (short interspersed element)-B1F motif that was named R53. In situ hybridization and northern blot analyses revealed that the R53 subfragment RNA bears a B1F motif, is processed from the primary transcrip...

OBJECTIVE Previous studies have shown the importance of somatic mutations and arginine residues in the complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of pathogenic anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibodies in human and murine lupus, and in studies of murine antibodies, a role of mutations at position 53 in V(H) CDR2 has been demonstrated. We previously demonstrated in vitro expression and mu...

This paper employs Roback’s locational-equilibrium model of public-goods pricing, crosssectional data from the Census of Population and Housing, and SMSA-level estimates of public capital stocks in order to examine the productive contribution of public capital. I find that public capital has a small positive impact on private output. JEL classification codes: E62, R53

Previous research has indicated a surprising statistically significant impact on the local economy in the city that wins the Super Bowl. An analysis of personal income growth in victorious Super Bowl cities from 1972-2000 cannot further confirm these results, finding no statistically significant effect on the local economies of these cities. Anopheles mosquitoes are vectors of malaria, a potentially fatal blood disease affecting half a billion humans worldwide. These blood-feeding insects include in their antihemostatic arsenal a potent thrombin inhibitor, the flexible and cysteine-less anophelin. Here, we present a thorough structure-and-function analysis of thrombin inhibition by anophelin, including the 2.3-Å crystal structure o...

We exploit Italian law DPR 81/2009, which determines class composition, as an instrument to identify the causal effect of grouping students of different grades into a single class (multigrading) on children cognitive achievement. This article focuses on 7-yearold students—those at the beginning of their formal education. Results suggest that attendance in multigrade classes versus single-grade ...

Professional sports franchises have used the lure of economic riches as an incentive for cities to construct new stadiums and arenas at considerable public expense. An analysis of taxable sales in Florida cities demonstrates that none of the 6 new franchises or 8 new stadiums and arenas in the state since 1980 have resulted in a statistically significant increase in taxable sales in the host me...

Within the approaches that have been applied to assess the impact of public capital on economic growth, this paper estimates the dynamic effects of public infrastructures using a structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) methodology for the Spanish regions. From a methodological point of view, our work contains different innovative features with respect to the previous studies using VAR models. T...

This paper analyses from an empirical point of view the relationship between the provision of high-speed rail services (HSR) and the evolution of tourism at the local level in Spain. We have built a database of 124 municipalities during the 2005-2012 period to study the effects of the introduction of new HSR corridors on the number of visitors and their total and average stay at several end-lin...

This study estimates the impact of London’s successful 2012 summer Olympics bid on property prices. Using a self-constructed dataset of a sample of property transactions, we estimate a semilogarithmic hedonic model for Greater London. Applying a difference-in-differences estimator, we find that properties in the host boroughs are sold between 2.1 and 3.3 percent higher, depending on the definit...
