INTRODUCTION While Shigellae and strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) are important causes of diarrhea-associated morbidity and mortality among infants and young children (<5 years of age), their health impact in older age groups is unclear. We sought to quantify the overall burden of shigellosis and ETEC diarrhea among older children, adolescents, and adults in Africa and South A...

The efficiencies of three enrichment broths and four plating media for isolation of enteric pathogens were compared from 1,117 stool specimens. Direct streaking proved to be inferior to enrichment, detecting only 50% of the salmonellae and 61% of the shigellae. By contrast, Selenite Broth (SF) found 90% of the total salmonellae isolates and 82% of the shigellae isolates. Gram-Negative Broth (GN...

T lymphocytes from a patient with Shigella flexneri dysentery and postdysenteric reactive arthritis were cloned by limiting dilution with recombinant interleukin-2 and a strain of S. flexneri different from that which had infected her. Five of eight clones produced proliferated in response to the shigellae used to generate the clones. The response required irradiated syngeneic blood mononuclear...

a total of 610 strains of shigellae isolated from cases of diarrhea in iran during 1962-73 were studied with respect to their phage type, as well as antibiotic resistance and transferable drug resistance along with serotyping. it was shown that there was some relation between serotypes and phage types but no association could be found between phage types and resistance pattern.

Many enteric media are more efficient for the detection of salmonellae than of shigellae. Comparisons of three enrichment broths and three plating media were made during analysis of 1,405 stool specimens to choose a combination of media which would enhance detection of shigellae as well. Gram-Negative (GN), Selenite, and Silliker's Broths were streaked to E M B, Salmonella-Shigella (SS), and xy...

Strains of Shigella flexneri with different invasive and pathogenic potentials were inoculated into the intestinal lumen of acutely ligated loops in nonimmune rabbits. After 90 min, tissues processed for ultrastructural as well as light microscopy showed that the bacilli were phagocytosed by M cells over lymphoid follicles of Peyer's patches and carried in vacuoles into the epithelium. Nonpatho...

Infection with invasive Shigella species results in intestinal inflammation in humans but no symptoms in adult mice. To investigate why adult mice are resistant to invasive shigellae, 6~8-week-old mice were infected orally with S. flexneri 5a. Shigellae successfully colonized the small and large intestines. Mild cell death was seen but no inflammation. The infected bacteria were cleared 24 hour...
