Stochastic matrix factorization (SMF) has proposed and it can be understood as a restriction to non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). SMF is useful for inference of topic models, NMF for binary matrices data, and Bayesian Network. However, it needs some strong assumption to reach unique factorization in SMF and also theoretical prediction accuracy has not yet clarified. In this paper, we stu...

The difficulty of fusion splicing hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (PBGF) to conventional step index single mode fiber (SMF) has severely limited the implementation of PBGFs. To make PBGFs more functional we have developed a method for splicing a hollow-core PBGF to a SMF using a commercial arc splicer. A repeatable, robust, low-loss splice between the PBGF and SMF is demonstrated. By filling...

We have reported previously [10,6] two algorithms for detecting microcalcifications that operate either on Highnam and Brady’s [3] hint representation or the latter’s presentation as an image: SMF = Standardised Mammogram Form. We introduce a third such method that applies to SMF a model of human foveal image processing. Comparative analysis with [10,6] shows significantly enhanced results for ...

quantitative structure-property relationship (qspr) for estimating the adsorption of aliphatic alcohols onto activated carbon were developed using substructural molecular fragments (smf) method. the adsorption capacity of activated carbon (gr/100grc) for 150 aliphatic alcohols onto activated carbon (ac) is studied under equilibrium conditions. forward and backwards stepwise regression variable ...

BACKGROUND Mammographic density is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. It is commonly measured by an interactive threshold method that does not fully use information contained in a mammogram. An alternative fully automated standard mammogram form (SMF) method measures density using a volumetric approach. METHODS We examined between-breast and between-view agreement, reliabili...

In the present study, a hybrid semi-supervised pixel-based classification algorithm is proposed for the automatic segmentation of intracranial aneurysms in Computed Tomography Angiography images. The algorithm was designed to discriminate image pixels as belonging to one of the two classes: blood vessel and brain parenchyma. Its accuracy in vessel and aneurysm detection was compared with two ot...

BACKGROUND Mammographic density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, usually measured by an area-based threshold method that dichotomizes the breast area on a mammogram into dense and nondense regions. Volumetric methods of breast density measurement, such as the fully automated standard mammogram form (SMF) method that estimates the volume of dense and total breast tissue, may provide a ...

Manganese (Mn) is an essential metal that can exert toxic effects at high concentrations, eventually leading to Parkinsonism. A major transporter of Mn in mammals is the divalent-metal transporter (DMT1). We characterize here DMT1-like proteins in the nematode C. elegans, which regulate and are regulated by Mn and iron (Fe) content. We identified three new DMT1-like genes in C. elegans: smf-1, ...

Microbial identification of orthopedic implant-associated infections using sonication fluid (SF) submitted to a concentration step by membrane filtration (SMF) was compared with the standard centrifugation (SC) method. Among 33 retrieved infected implants, sonication identified microorganisms in 26 (78.8%). The sensitivity of SC was higher than that of SMF (78.8% versus 30.3%; P < 0.001).

Sputum acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear microscopy has suboptimal sensitivity but remains the most commonly used laboratory test to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We prospectively evaluated the small membrane filtration (SMF) method that concentrates AFB in a smaller area to facilitate detection to improve the diagnostic performance of microscopy. We enrolled adults with suspicion of pulmon...
