introduction: nocardia is saprophytic soil bacterium of the actinomycetes families. nocardia has high diversity of species and due to species diversity of nocardia, phenotypic tests are essential for early identification of nocardia species. methods: 155 soil samples from different regions of north khorasan province in iran were collected, including: urban and rural areas. isolation of nocardia...

Abstract Background and Objective: The Isolation of Nocardia species is complex and time-consuming, which is due to rapid growth of adjacent bacteria. Because of the importance of a specific medium with the ability of controlling intrusive microorganisms, this study aimed at comparing three laboratory methods to introduce the reliable isolation technique for Nocardia species. Material and Met...

170 patients admitted to shariaty hospital pulmonary ward were studied for pulmonary nocardiosis during 17 months (aug 1990-jan 1992). paraffin baiting was used and nocardia asteroides isolated in five cases from sputum, pleural fluid and bronchial washing. the technique used in this study inhibits growth of other organism and yeast and is reliable, simple and cheap for isolation of nocardia fr...

Background & Aims: Nocardia are gram-positive, aerobic, relative acid-fast, and opportunistic bacteria, and one of the causes of systematic infection around the world. The natural habitats of these bacteria are soil and dust. Hospitalized patients with immune deficiency are at high risk of transmission of opportunistic infection. Due to these facts and the complexities that exist in the isolati...

Of 1,510 sputum samples examined from 1,016 patients with bronchopulmonary disorders, Nocardia asteroides was isolated from 67 samples by paraffin baiting, as compared with only 30 isolations by the conventional technique of culturing on Sabouraud dextrose agar. This higher efficacy of the paraffin bait technique was found to be statistically significant (P less than 0.001).

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), important organisms in the Genus Mycobacterium and commonly present in the environment, are known to cause disseminated disease in AIDS patients. In this study, NTM were isolated from environment (soil and water) of the AIDS patients with disseminated NTM disease to know the prevalence of environmental NTM species and their correlation with clinical isolates f...

The reported case is of primary pulmonary nocardiosis, caused by Nocardia brasiliensis, in a immunocompromised patient, which ended fatally despite appropriate treatment. The partially acid fast filamentous bacterium was predominant on direct examination of the sputum. It was cultured on blood agar, MacConkey agar and by paraffin baiting technique. The bacterium was resistant to cotrimoxazole, ...
