In this paper we present spatium, a set of free, open source and modular software tools for sound spatialization, describing the creative and technical aspects considered during its development. The system is comprised of spatialization renderers, spatialization interfaces, DAW plugins and Max objects that communicate via OSC (Open Sound Control). They aim to: facilitate the exploration of diff...

This paper presents ongoing work into the design of interfaces for live musical performance using gesture controlled sound spatialization. In particular, we discuss the use of performer’s gestures to allow them to manipulate spatialization parameters without their conscious control. A number of motion capture sessions involving a cello performer are described through which we determined a set o...

The article presents a new audio spatialization algorithm for spatialization methods based on the headrelated transfer function (HRTF). The algorithm uses a mathematical model of the HRTF to make the spatialization process simple and fast. The article thoroughly describes this algorithm and provides a comparison of the algorithm to the traditional block convolution filtering approach.

The Multi-touch Interface for Acousmatic Music Spatialization (MIAM Spat) project deals with a new way of performing live music spatialization. Spatialization artists currently use hardware mixing consoles to produce threedimensional sound effects, within concert halls that contain up to fifty speakers [1]. The current main spatialization technique consists in associating a fader of the mixing ...

Spatialization can be used in sonification as an additional mapping dimension. Immersive spatialization also transmits more auditory data to a subject, compared to monophonic or stereophonic presentation. In this study the VBAP spatialization method is applied to the sonification of meteorological data gathered from a large geographical area in two different listening conditions. Parameter-driv...

We propose a multi-layer structure to mediate essential components in sound spatialization. This approach will facilitate artistic work with spatialization systems, a process which currently lacks structure, flexibility, and interoperability.

This paper outlines technical and aesthetic approaches to sound spatialization for electroacoustic music composition. In particular, the paper discusses how spatialization (sound diffusion) can be used to realize specific musical objectives. Technological solutions to problems associated with adapting multichannel compositions for live spatialization are explored, with particular reference to t...

Spatialization is a special kind of visualization that projects multidimensional data into low-dimensional representational spaces by making use of spatial metaphors. Spatialization methods face a dual challenge: on the one hand, to apply dimension reduction techniques in order to overcome the limitations of the representational space, and on the other hand, to provide a metaphoric framework fo...

This paper presents the development of methods for gesture control of sound spatialization. It provides a comparison of seven popular software spatialization systems from a control point of view, and examines human-factors issues relevant to gesture control. An effort is made to reconcile these two designand parameter-spaces, and draw useful conclusions regarding likely successful mapping strat...

Specter combines music information retrieval (MIR) with sound spatialization to provide a simple, yet versatile environment to experiment with sound spatialization for music composition and live performance. Through various interfaces and sensors, users may position sounds at arbitrary locations and trajectories in a three-dimensional plane. The system utilizes the JythonMusic environment for s...
