Debris flow is an important sedimenttransport mechanism in subaerial and subaqueous environments. Its properties change almost continuously as sediment and water are added to or subtracted from it (Smith and Lowe, 1991; Vallance, 2000). In subaerial environments, debris flows are commonly diluted into hyperconcentrated flows when they encounter a streamflow (Pierson and Costa, 1987; Costa, 1988...

The analysis of the propagation phase plays a fundamental role in the assessment and forecasting of risks related to the occurrence of submerged and coastal landslides. At present there are few numerical models able to simulate the propagation of such a type of events. This paper presents fully 3D models and approaches developed by the authors and suitable for the simulation of both completely ...

Sognefjord is formed by a combination of exploitation of rock structure and subaerial and subglacial processes. The fjord system follows zones of rock-structural weakness. Above sea level the landforms are due mainly to subaerial processes, and somewhat surprisingly not to glacial activity. Removal of erosive products and deepening of the fjord below sea level is due to glacial erosion.

The Watanabea clade of the Trebouxiophyceae includes unicellular coccoid green microalgae that mostly thrive in subaerial microhabitats. Recently, a number of new genera and species were described on the basis of the DNA sequence data and morphological observations. The peculiar genus Phyllosiphon, which forms a monophyletic clade within the Watanabea clade, is characterized by forming siphonou...

Granulometric, mineralogical and morphological investigation of the sea-bottom sediments in the Grgur Channel has revealed fi ve sediment types, the most frequent of which are muds containing some amount of coarse fractions (sand and gravel). The coarsest fractions are predominantly composed of recent shell fragments. Unexpected well rounded carbonate gravel was found SE of Prvić Island in 83 m...

FIG. 1.—Alternative explanations of strata exhibiting progradational followed by retrogradational stacking. In Interpretation 1, the switch in stacking patterns is interpreted as a combined type I sequence boundary (SB(I)) and transgressive surface (TS), underlain by the highstand systems tract (HST) and overlain by the transgressive systems tract (TST). In Interpretation II, the switch in stac...

[1] Hole 1205A was drilled on Nintoku Seamount, which lies in the midportion of the Emperor Seamount Chain. This seamount was emergent 56 Myr ago but was submerged by 54 Ma, so the lavas have endured weathering in both subaerial and submarine environments. We have studied the petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of intercalated altered basalts, breccias, and soil samples recovered at Hole 12...

The Mar Piccolo basin is an internal sea basin located along the Ionian coast (Southern Italy), and it is surrounded primarily by fractured carbonate karstic environment. Because of the karstic features, the main continental water inflow is from groundwater discharge. The Mar Piccolo basin represents a peculiar and sensitive environment and a social emergency because of sea water and sediment p...
