Lagrangian symmetries are found for hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, which result in conservation of potential vorticity and of cross helicity, respectively. These symmetries, which persist in the reduction from Lagrangian to Eulerian variables, directly give rise to Casimir invariants of the Hamiltonian formalism.
